Alright, I've got it! This is the best plan yet. How about we fill in Lake Latrine, and then the university can sell it to developers to some nice $$$ and then the students won't need to have their tuition raised???
I think I came into this thread too late. Anyway, I'm a lifelong Ames resident, and though I don't think that is the most important thing in terms of having input on what the city needs to do, it helps to have the perspective. Though the ideas being discussed here are all interesting, for the most part they have already been brought up and shot down at some point in the last 25 years. And it is too bad the city government can't stop itself from getting in its' own way. Frustrating as it is, I'm surprised at the progress this city has made even in the last 10 years.
So, back to the original point of this thread, a new 5 story mixed use project replacing a couple of shantys in the first block of Welch Ave. sounds like a great way to start "revitalizing" campustown. The city council is supposed to hear it tonight and maybe vote on it. Since it does sound like a good project, and it is being proposed by a company based out of a really cool college town (Cham-bana), it's the ideal time for the 4 unqualified counselors (Goodman, Popken, Doll and Rice) to shoot it down so they can spend more time talking about whether Carr Pool should stay open or not.

It kills me every person who thinks they know everything about Ames because they came from Ames, and just because they have spent their entire life their, they think they know so much more than anyone else about its residents, and what needs to be done.
With your vast knowledge and vision for Ames why dont you make a run for city council?

I would not put Ryan Doll into that mix...he has been on the side of pro-growth, at least as of late.
The other three I will agree with you on. I at least respect Matt Goodman's opinion as it seems like he at least pays attention to the studies and facts, however just differs in opinion with me. The other two I do not respect in the least, as it seems they are just out-right anti-growth, and there needs to be a very large push to get both Popken and Rice off the City Council this November!

Then 8 other spots right behind the building in Legacy. 28 units, 28 parking spots. Chamberlain Lofts has the same thing, 1 parking spot per unit.
Now I am agreeing with chuckd? What's this world coming to? Popken and Rice are both TERRIBLE. The city is lucky to have Larson and Mahayni to balance those two out. They do all they can, but are usually outvoted. I think that things are slowly changing...and a good way to jumpstart change would be to vote out Popken and Rice.
BTW, how idiotic is it that people waste their time trying to save Carr Pool when a new aquatic complex is being built 10 blocks away??? Tell you what, if you love Carr Pool so much, you buy it from the city and run it. Just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Right up there with wanting to prevent a developer from building a mall outside of town when he is paying for the entire thing including infrastructure. Nah, we don't need the extra sales tax and would rather people just go shop in Des Moines.
Doesnt mean its not a problem. More than one person in those units likely has cars, creating an increased need for parking in campustown. The city should really get the developers to chip in towards the parking solution since theyre responsible for creating the problem.
You guys can keep bickering back and forth, but I think you're pretty off on that post. I'm pretty confident I know more about Ames than transplants and students who spend 4-6 years here. I'm not saying I know more about what needs to be done but I do know the type of residents we have pretty well. I wouldn't go to some other town and claim to know more about it than someone who had lived there for 30+ years.
Why would we need another hotel in campus town? We have a ton of hotels just a few miles away (accessible by CyRide), and the MU is just across the street.

As for the parking- I think they should reconsider the size of the garage that they are going to have for this "highrise". Even if it is one per unit- what about for customers for the commercial space on the first floor and the employees and etc.
What they really need to do is build a large parking garage behind the subway.

The new Ames mall is going to be at 13th street and 35 and it isn't going to be much of a mall. It is going to be more of a strip mall, and I'm not sure if they are still going to do it because the city put so many restrictions on it.
If Ankeny was smart, they would put up a mall on the north side of town between the rest area and the Elkhart exit on I-35. I'm pretty sure thats only a 15 minute drive from Ames. People would drive 15 minutes to spite the anti-development Ames City Council.
