New FloW rankings

With the mass Olympic redshirting at 133, Gomez ranked 9th is a head scratcher to me. What am I missing there?
They still have a lot of guys at the weight. He has a NCAA loss to DeSanto, has never beat Fix, and Phillipi from Pitt topside. Bravo Young beat Phillipi and was an AA. The ranking is fair, he has not done anything to prove he is better than the wrestlers penciled in ahead of him. Can that change? Well, that's why you wrestle the matches.

Definitely beatable, but he is the highest returning finisher at 141, not counting Yianni and Eierman, who are taking Olympic redshirts.

Makes for a bit of a "down" weight, or at the very least, wide open with tons of guys having a chance to AA or win a title.
Demas deserves the ranking. He beat a ton of guys at 141 in the tournament last year. Really exceeded expectations and peaked at the right time.

Moving up when you start ranked is easier than getting ranked sometimes. Our guys are on the radar all they have to do is perform now.

Fix isn’t there (or shouldn’t be) because he’s redshirting. Gomez beat DeSanto in the dual, and stuck RBY in their only head-to-head (granted, he had put himself in a hole before he tossed him).

You have good points, so I’m not really debating anything. Just offering a couple counter points for conversation.

Gomez was majored by DeSanto in the last match in the blood round, so that is going to put him ahead. And I live and hour from OSU and Fix taking a RS is not a done deal. Stay tuned.

I don’t disagree at all, he deserves to be #1. But I don’t see him as a guy that you look at and just automatically put him in the NCAA semis or finals.

About half the #1s I think you can pretty much pencil in as a top 4 AA (Lee, Gross, Joseph, Hall, Valencia). I don’t view Demas in that way, and that was what I was trying to get at.

IMO I see him as a Zeke Moisey type after 2015. Solid season, incredible postseason, still a wait-and-see approach if he can do it consistently.

I would agree there just isn't anyone else at that weight without Yianni. I keep thinking Nick Lee will make the next step, but Demas mauled him last year on the backside. I think you look at Dom's physical attributes and the lack of a clear cut top level talent, and you see why he is there right now.

Straight from the horse's mouth, doesn't get much easier than this. This is probably behind the paywall so I'm not sure everyone can see it.
Fix says he is leaning towards an ORS and then says I'm sure we will make the final decision here shortly.

This is key. I think it was a done deal until Brock picked up his injury. I hope he can RS just so he can come back at 125 and beat Lee in the finals. I don't hate Lee, but the Brands brothers would deserve that one.

I think some of these Olympic Redshirts will be wrestling NCAA in the 2nd semester.

I think they test the waters & when reality sets in that they probably not going to win trials, will be back. Suriano comes to mind, especially if Fix keeps his on

Buf what are realistic expectations for Shapiro this year?

I think Shapiro is a NQfer. He is skilled. Tough weight for any freshmen. I’d be disappointed with anything less and amazed at anything more.

Before that though, if Dugan can manage the cut he is going to give Shapiro all he can handle.

Good question. At 1st I thought he would be a small 197 pounder. He has been putting on some weight. I don't think he will be a big 197 pounder. I think he will be solid.

I also am curious how the Duggan vs Shapiro matchup is going.

Is it unreasonable to think that all 10 of the starters will be national qualifiers barring injury? My expectation is 9 guys but I think Chase can qualify at 165 if he shows the same form he did at the end of last year. I also feel like Shapiro or Duggan can sneak in at 197 as well.

I don't think it is a stretch that we should have a guy at every weight in the top 33. I would expect close to 10 guys at Nationals most years. Of course that is barring injuries

What are reasonable expectations for Straw at 65? Given that he earns he spot there which I would guess is likely. How much did he have to suck down to get to 57?

I think he had to get bigger. I assume 157 was a normal cut for him

Yeah 157 wasn’t even really a cut for him. He’s had to get bigger this offseason, but I also think this is the first full offseason he has been fully bought into the coaching staff and could see him being a 2-2 guy at NCAAs at 165
