NSCR: New Chase Format

Another year, another NASCAR rule change to manufacture 'excitement'.

Stopped caring and trying to keep up with what the points system is a few years ago.

They have managed to ruin the integrity of a champion. I have went to a huge fan to a casual watcher. Don't believe the format crowns a true Champion.

I like the Chase because of the late season drama it creates, but like Cyclone06 said, does it really crown the true champion? I would like to see a system with todays points, but no chase, wonder how the season would go.

I like it but of course I'm a Petty fan so hopefully Marcos Ambrose can win a road race again and get in the Chase. I also like the final four winner takes all rather than the accumulative point system we have now. Seems when a driver gets in the lead it is too hard to catch him.

Based on this do you not like the NCAA tourney, NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB playoffs? By no means do those tournaments always crown the best team, they crown the winner of that specific tournament.

The point system rewards a driver for year-long excelllence whereas the chase allows you to get hot at the end and win. The chase does create more excitement at the end of the year, though, and that means more viewers and more money.

If I look at last year, Junior, Kurt Busch and Clint Bowyer were in the Chase but did not have a win. At seasons end there were 16 drivers in the top 30 that had wins, (Stewart was one and would be eliminated because he missed more than 1 race), so David Ragan had 1 win and would have eliminated one of those 3 I believe. I couldn't find stands after 26 wins to verify if anybody picked up their only win during the Chase itself.

Also in 2011, I think Junior might have been eliminated from being in the Chase by David Ragon or Ragan Smith.

and who would legitimately believe that either of those Regan/Ragan's are at the same level as those other three? By this system, the rain-shortened race winner is going to get in over someone who is clearly having a better year (but no wins).

and Kurt Busch isn't going to Indy, he's going to Stewart's team, as is Harvick. They're changing the Chase (again!) to get more entertainment. I think having Stewart/Harvick/Busch on the same team will provide plenty of entertainment.

The only one that really does with any sort of accuracy is the BCS. And we are ditching that. I don't think people want that. They want win or go home situations.

If it wasn't obvious, I'm not a fan of the chase, but I'll put that right up front for full disclosure...

That was the wisdom behind it, but the data doesn't bear it out. First year of the chase was 2004. NASCAR viewership peaked in 2005, and it's been declining since then. Currently about a 30% reduction...seems wildly popular, right?

on the revenue side, I didn't look it up, but the sniff test tells me teams aren't dropping cars or struggling for sponsorship because they're making too much money.

The original Chase format I was ok with, but this is crazy. Racing isn't a sport that can define a champion this way. NCAA tourney makes a team qualify by being pretty good in regular season and winning 6 consecutive games against what is legit competition. That is a true champion. NASCAR relies on so many components, if a driver has one motor failure, could be the only one of the season, and they will be eliminated. It's not comparable to an injury where the team can finish with another player, they would just be eliminated......Hate it!

Just to clarify Jimmy Johnson is the champion of NASCAR so at least he dominates the chase just like he would if points were back to a full season accrual. BTW I am not a fan of him but will admit he is the best in the sport right now.

Races have become all about fuel mileage and pit strategy. I'll put a race on but usually spend a lot of time switching channels. Cautions are about the only way anyone can pick up track position anymore.
