New Blackout License Plates

I am thinking of getting some since I drive a black truck. The cyclone plates just don't look great on it. But I'll still keep my ...4cy on it and my helmet sticker in the window.

I think my dislike of the ISU plates goes along with my dislike of gold uniforms. Always thought the Simpson College plates were better looking than ISU since the base background color was red and the lettering was gold (more like the uniforms). Black plate on black vehicle is A+ in my book.

Only if you have a black car.

Maybe we'll get to the point of ordering whatever custom background color you like. Send in the the pantone and they'll make it for you.

The real question is can non Hawkeye fans use these?[/QUOTE said:

I'd say the rules in red below would prohibit most Hawk fans from using them.

Personalized plates

Personalized license plates may consist of up to seven characters and numbers. All personalized plate choices must have at least two characters.

  • No punctuation marks are allowed.
  • No denoting a government agency (i.e., DOT).
  • No display of characters that are sexual in connotation.
  • No characters suggesting profane, obscene or inflammatory words or phrases, or those contrary to public policy.
  • No characters or words defined in dictionaries as a term of vulgarity, contempt, prejudice, hostility, insult, or racial or ethnic degradation.
  • No characters considered to be offensive.

I saw my first 2 sets on the road today, unaware of them or this thread. First feeling was revulsion, followed by "where's the damned hokeye?" Both were smallish cars, one was black. Didn't matter. Not for me.

Dordt College is going to be the big loser in this. The "blackout" plate was inspired by so many people buying their specialty plate just because of the color scheme:

Now, with people buying the specific "blackout" plate, Dordt loses out on the cut of revenue they got from those plate sales.

If the state can increase revenue by somehow getting people to voluntarily pay extra for these things, good for them.

"The black background, white text Dordt license plates are mostly used by people who support Dordt College. But word on social media is that due to the plate’s minimalist design, some Iowans are also buying the Dordt plates, then buying a black frame to cover up the reference to the Christian college in northwest Iowa, giving a sleek look to their vehicle."

I just renewed my registration yesterday thought about paying for the black plates to get rid of the ugly ass new regular plate, If it wasn't for the fact I can get firefighter plates soon I would of pulled the trigger and spent the $30 bucks for the new plate, heavens forbid I all ready pay enough in registration for my truck I should have the option of what plate I want to begin with. the black plate would of looked great with my black wheels and trim on my blue truck.

I’d pay money just to have the option to buy the old plates again.

Which old plates? The solid blues with white embossed letters/numbers? Me too.

The most recent generation of plates wasn't too bad. I just wish they were all still being embossed, but that costs a lot more for the prisons to make.
