In the video, they mentioned how they came to those conclusions. The object being towed is approximately the same length as her plane, and the forensic analyst said it is "very likely" that the two in the photo are Earhart and Noonan, based on facial features and body shape compared to other photos of the two.
I should ask my former co-worker what he thinks. He went on one of the investigation digs on the island where most think they crashed, survived and then perished. He been quite into the Earhart stuff, obviously.
I think this current theory is pretty much BS speculation that ties into the old she was captured thoughts. Not much to go on and like similar stories it relies heavily on everyone that knew never telling. And if this were remotely true, lots of people would have known since it's not like some local official would have gone rouge and kept her a prisoner in secret locally until she died. Like all good conspiracy theories, it's most highly improbable but not 100% impossible so it won't go away.

History Channel figured that one out last year as well, even talked to him at the end. I think it was called "DB Cooper, Case Closed?"
My mom is a pilot and This is her idol. I have watched so many documentarys on this. I don't believe this story. I mean I am not against it. I think she crashed on an island and lived for a short time and eventually died. They have found a few items on the island they think are hers. There is also an Expedition kicking off soon where they think they know where her plane got caught in the tide and sank. We shall see. Definetly fun to think about. Kind of like the DB Cooper case.

The person from the island that took the picture of 'Noonan and Earhart' was executed for being a spy. My guess is that IF (emphasize if) this is true there would not be a lot of official information about it.

I never heard this. Last I knew they thought it was a Boeing employee because of the fibers on the tie.
Exactly, it was all rehashed evidence with someone getting the finger pointed to them afterwards. Just saying I don't trust History Channel on presenting new evidence for things that aren't already reported.

Apparently this has been well known in Japan for years...there was a set of commemorative postage stamps made in the '80's in Japan about this. Also, according to the Today show (I know, I know) the Commandant of the Marine Corps (Gen. Leonard Chapman, Jr.) indicated in a letter in 1971 that Earhart died on Saipan.
So after the crash they transported Amelia & Noonan to a prison on Saipan? Is there anymore to the story?
AE and Noonan were spying for the US, this has often been mentioned. She crashed and was kept as a PO by the Japanese. The person that took the picture was executed as a spy. That picture was a proof of life, and it was easier for the US to just say she was dead and not even make an attempt to get her back.
Not sure if he's serious but I'm inclined to believe Thatguy's post. The IJN had been spreading across the Pacific since the '20's so it's not a huge leap to think that the US asked Earhart to remember what she saw there or take some pics. It's also highly probable that any American found near Saipan in 1937 by the Japanese would be considered hostile and accused of spying regardless of if they were or weren't.
Meh, I just think it's plausible. A good way to vanish in the late thirties would be to get picked up by the Japanese.Not many Occam's razor disciples here.

Of the theories, I have often found this one to be quite "fantastic" "found her briefcase," However, In the 30s it was much easier to cover up stuff and destroy stuff without everyone knowing what was going on, so who knows.

Well my day has been ruined by personal research thanks to this thread.
This photo coupled with eyewitness testimony from the area is hard for me to dismiss. While I doubt the U.S. secretly enlisted Earhart & Noonan as spies, I'd bet Japan thought they were. Earhart could have been lost and ditched at the nearest atoll she could find not knowing it was Japanese territory & they could potentially be treated harshly. The biggest problem for me is:
Why would Japan want to keep their imprisonment a secret? Perhaps they were tortured before their celebrity status was realized?
