New 8/25 Depth Chart

my thoughts:

very nice to see Jacob Gannon up to #2 at RT. We seem to have a lot of talent coming up through the OL.

I hadn't realized that Lichtenburg moved from RT to RG. I wonder if he could move over to LG if Tuftee doesn't pan out.

The SLB position seems really weak, which I find strange given what seems to be great depth at the other two LB positions. I think it's a good thing that Morgan and Broomfield are ahead of Morton, even though he played a bunch last year. I bet Tau'o'fu, George and Miller still see the field a lot.

No Jon Caspers on the chart anywhere, OL or DL.

It's not very often a name pops up on the depth chart that I'm not familiar with, but who is Matthew Thomas?

If they weren't comfortable with Morgan playing, I am guessing they wouldn't have essentially replaced a returning starter and a guy pushing him hard, to put Morgan in the game. Morgan will be just fine.

Even though hes a true freshman, I wouldn't mind seeing Miller out there at LB. But I am pretty interested in seeing Morton if they do use him as an attacking role. I also notice hes the backup nickle back. I've heard a lot of good things about Brackins at safety, so I'm assuming when we do go nickle Benton slides over and Brackins comes in?

Also even with Horne as the "backup", he might still be starting if Reynolds can't play right away. And I have no doubt if that happens he isn't coming out of the starting lineup. But if not they will still use more than just those top three WR's anyways.

I was hoping that if he was near Patrick Neal they would play him over Neal rather than choosing to redshirt him.
I was hoping he would have shown that much progress as well. Of course, the season hasn't started yet, and he may work his way in as it progresses.

Well... that would fit Wally's style that he used at Florida State. He usually had a smaller/faster linebacker out there that he would move around to blitz the quarterback. That style was very effective at FSU.
Remember, that's the spot they had Adrian Bennett penciled into in the spring.

Weak probably wasn't the right term. I trust Wally, I'm sure he knows what he's doing. As high as people are on Morgan, its interesting that he and Broomfield are co-starters right now.

What I meant was that the SLB position is short on size and experience.

We appear solid at CB for 1st string but after that......... where is Anthony Young?!?! Matthew Thomas ahead of him? I know the staff is high on him.

Not real impressed with Anthony Young from his play last year. So I am actually pleased that he is not on the 2 deep.

Basically with Morgan starting at SLB, we are going to be in the Nickle/4-3 hybrid all the time. That lineup has our best two LBs and our hybrid on the field all the time.
My only minor concern is how Morgan holds up against the heavy run teams on the schedule. If the DL is as improved as advertised, that will help out.

Irving has potential, but I think he is still probably too raw. I would hate to lose a year of eligibility for only a small amount of PT. Give him a year to really learn the position and I have a feeling he will be in the two deeps next year.

All the WRs are going to play and I think the starters are just listed based on experience. However, it makes me wonder if Lenz has turned it on since missing time this spring. Hopefully he had a good camp.

Quick note: Earl Brooks is out for the season with torn ACL per CycloneFB twitter.

Perhaps. I think it could also mean that the kid has only played football for 2-3 seasons and they would rather redshirt him to give him another year to get better. I was hoping that if he was near Patrick Neal they would play him over Neal rather than chosing to redshirt him.

I see what you mean. That makes sense.

If he proves to be as good as it looks like he could be, saving a year as a redshirt could be pretty irrelevant in the long run.

I'm starting to get a bit concerned about ineligibilities and injuries.

AY got hurt in the 2nd or 3rd game last season and was never 100%. By that time Reeves emerged as the better player. The first 2-3 games that Young was the starter was the first time he'd played at this level, you gotta cut him some slack.

Unless Irving is an All-American in his junior year there is no way he would go pro early. We have some decent DE's. And I am not sold that Irving would have the discipline to hold up against the run. Irving is still 17 years old or just turned 18. Young, young, young, young.

Talent isn't bound by age. The kid (I would never say that to his face) is 6'7", 261 lbs. It doesn't matter if he is 17 or 21... with that size if he has talent he is going to get noticed.

USC doesn't come knocking at a kids door if he doesn't have tremendous talent.

If we are getting pounded by power teams we have the flexibility to move Klien to SLB and insert MT at MLB.

I think that is the result of injuries, ineligibility, and defections.. Hopefully Bundrage and Daniels are ready.

I like how Willie Scott is still second string. He had a great spring game. Also of note is Chris Young at second string, I've heard that Gary had a good training camp, so Young has apparently been stepping up.

Irving has talent, but its prob too early to decide whether to burn his redshirt or not. If hrs not much better than done 4th year guys, redshirt him. He still hs a lot of time to work his way up the chart too.

Great news on Brundrage and Daniels looking like they may play

Great news on Klein being MLB with Morgan being the SLB. I think that is our best 3 LB's right there. Morgan blitzing from that position is going to be very very effective.

Really wish Irving was in the two deep. I just don't like what the 2nd string brings us as far as rushing the QB

I'd rather not see Shontrelle return kicks

This I agree with. I see zero reason to have the starting RB back their returning kickoffs. Put Jarvis West back there or take the RS off of Teddy Lampkin. Or give ALbert Gary a chance.

Aside from Reynolds, what concerns you?

I do find it interesting with all the hype around both George and Tauafoo last year.. Morgan just comes in and slides Klein over and passes up both those guys.
