Need help on car repair

I would suggest staying away from Firestone. I knew I was going to need new front brakes soon so I had them take a look. They said I needed new brakes on all 4 wheels (and I'd better get it done within 2 weeks as it was dangerous to drive) and that I needed new rotors. The total bill was around $800. To compare, I took the care to a small shop in Ankeny and he said the rotors were just fine, the rear brakes were also fine, and the front brakes were worn down to about 15-20% so I had just those replaced for slightly over $100.

I'll second that regarding Firestone. I took my wife's vehicle in there and they said the brakes were in bad shape. Funny thing was, I had just had the brakes fixed a few weeks prior.

Iowa Auto repair in Urbandale used to give me great service from rate & quality perspective. Now my inlaws have a shop in Denison so all is free:biggrin9gp:

Trickles is crap here in Ames too. They share a parking lot with my wife's employer and she took the car there for things like oil changes. They never once fixed any of the problems we had. Would hand us the car back with a new part that didn't fix the problem along with a bill for $300. They would routinely talk down to my wife when she requested Mobil 1 for our oil changes, claiming that it was a waste of money and she didn't know what she was talking about. She dropped the car off to have them mount some tire I had bought online. All she got was an earful about how they could have gotten her much better tires. I kept telling her that she should go somewhere else, but it was so convenient she just put up with it.

Then I told her to try Freedom Tire on Lincoln Way, on the other side of the building she works in. I have nothing but great things to say about them. They check with me before doing anything. They separate the estimates into things I need and things that aren't really necessary. On a couple of occasions I have decided to fix the car myself after having them look at it and have never been charged for the diagnosis. They have free rotation and balancing with their tires which they will happily pull your car right in for. I won't go anywhere else as long as I'm here.
