My only complaint - the wildcat

The only time this has worked consistently was Dolphins in 2009. They ran it 3-4 x today and once in the red zone against TOE and been ineffective each time. Meanwhile, DM got a td lined up in a conventional formation.

I am not sure why this is being run. I don't question CMC on much, but this play needs to be ripped out of the playbook.

Thought about this... Every team left has film on that where DM and only DM got the ball. But that formation had SO many play makers in it. I think if they work on it they can have multiple play-makers touch the ball from 1 formation. Players, plays, formations. This one may pay dividends deeper in conference play.

If that sticks around (which I think it will), there will need to be more options utilized. My opinion is that DM needs to have the ball ~33% of the time if that play remains effective at all.

Our OL never gives the wildcat a chance.

We are definitely using it to set up plays for later... But there have been a few times where we could have used those plays (either a D Jones sweep or Montgomery Pass). Montgomery up the middle with no hole to run through is getting incredibly frustrating.

My (small) complaints-
1. Going into halftime, receiving a kick with 0:05 on the clock.. if the plan is to run out the clock why not tell Kene to just attempt a return to run out the clock? That has more of a chance of a big play than a Kene sweep backed up to our own end zone.

2. There was a bad spot on 2nd or 3rd down which should have been challenged. We came away with no points on that one

I watched Auburn loose 4 yards running the Wildcat against LSU. The defense really crowds the line of scrimmage.
 
Ok St just did it inside the Boise 5 on 3rd down and got nothing. Silliness.

I understand if you want to set this up to have DM throw it or something, but this should not be in any playbook.

What plays? How about just go with what you know works?

There just aren’t any good plays inside the 10, so I think the wildcat can work, they just have to get better at executing it.

Butler TD at :49 is from the 5. It also takes execution, but his advantages are numerous.

That’s a perfect throw, though. High pass to a 6’6” guy who barely gets a foot in? That’s not a great play call, that’s a great play by two players.

I wish we would've actually run a screen to Montgomery out of that bunch set to the right with all those blockers in front of him instead of shifting in.

True--is a toss to 6'6 Butler a better chance than ramming it into the back of the Oline no matter how many times it didn't work?

If you can put Butler, Allen, Eaton, and DM all on the field together in short yardage early in the set of downs, you utilize those players.

Is there a reason this works so much less so far than when Lanning ran it? Teams knew 99% he was running.

This play is absolutely stupid. Basically takes the pass option out of play, so the defense just all keys on DM. Not too hard.

And I don't agree with this BS that it will pay off at some later date when we do pass it from that formation. Maybe so, but is it worth it to kill a bunch of series early in the year ( and possibly cost you games), just to "trick" someone down the road so you can say... "see, I told ya it would set us up for a play down the road". Meanwhile, you killed a bunch of drives just to set up that one surprise. Just dumb.

Aside from the wildcat, I have another complaint: we haven’t won a single game in 2018.
