MTV started 40 years ago yesterday and.....

I was disappointed in loss of music videos on there but when youtube came along and people can find there favorite music videos whenever they want the market for them on TV isn't a huge deal anymore.

Saw this yesterday on Twitter. Some of you reminiscing about MTV I believe will appreciate this and take you right back to the good ole days. (Man he looks weird though)

Video from Lollapolooza over the weekend.

One of the best rebrands ever. Can’t wait for the tour.

Yeah the early 2000s is when MTV fell off the map for music videos. Total Request Live was one of the only video programming periods on the station by then.

We got cable in the 80s and it was wall to wall videos for most of it. The Real World was the turning point. They did have stuff like Beavis and Butthead and Liquid Television, both cartoons that strayed away from music, but MTV soon got addicted to reality tv after the success of The Real World and Road Rules. Teen Mom became a thing eventually as well.

At least Beavis and Butthead had them watch a handful of music video clips and comment on them each episode, so they were semi-music television.

Shameless thread plug: On-topic, in case anyone missed it (due to realignment thread overload/page shove-down) and wants to add favorites to the mix:

MTV is garbage but did have a great marketing idea for bands and it worked for about 15 years. I miss Rude Awakening, Headbangers ball, Rock Video’s that don’t suck, Yo MTV raps, The Grind, and the must see top 10 countdown which I hurried up to watch after school. Reality TV is a *****.....

I'm almost 40, and I didn't have cable until the early 00's. But I don't think I've ever seen music on MTV.

Unless is a commercial, or the theme song for a show about pregnant teenagers or annoyingly loud people on the East Coast :jimlad:

We got satellite around '96 and it was vast majority music videos although the Real World/Road Rules stuff was really taking off.

I remember when it was added to our cable in maybe 88 or 89. It was a big controversy in town - all that sex and drugs etc on TV, heavens to betsy.

Beavis & Butthead was HUGELY controversial back then, remember that? Now it's freaking quaint compared to a lot of what's on TV.

Van Halen"s soft core porn with the teacher was the devil's work.

My son turns 11 in a few days and was a terrible sleeper. I vividly remember watching music videos on MTV in the middle of the night while trying to get him to sleep.

Far East Movement had a song at the time, Like a G6 which had a base line that kind of soothes him for some reason. Calmed him every time. I’ll be forever grateful for that music video and I heard like a G6 probably 1,000 times over the next year. God awful song that will always have a place in my heart.
