Need to move some estate items (1100 miles) and one of the items is a 15 + YO refrigerator. U haul trailers not tall enough to stand it up. I've had several people tell me you can move on its side if you keep pressure off compressor and wait to plug it in. Can't find much on internet to confirm that.
Anyone have any first hand experience they would care to share?

I would sell it locally, but if not call the manufacturer and ask.

make sure you air the refrigerator out before your haul it around the country, because it’s gonna smell if you don’t.

I sold a whirlpool French door garage fridge to a buddy using that method. He says he let it stand in the garage for a few days before putting power to it but it ended up frying it.

Had a new one that I had standing vertically until it escaped the tie-down and flipped out of the back of my pick-up, and skidded along the highway a ways, fortunately didn't get hit by any other vehicles. A testimony to great packaging for international shipping, it survived that adventure. Reloaded it and transported it on its side for the remainder of a 100 mile move, let it stand overnight, it's still running fine 10 years later.

So apparently it can work out fine, not that I'd recommend it.

But, 15 years is kinda ancient for a refrigerator, I'd not make the effort for that simple reason, unless it has strong sentimental value.

Would it be worth trying to sell it so you don’t have to move it?
This is what I would do. I would guess if you set the price point low enough, you could sell it within hours.

Check with the local electric utility company. They may pick it up and haul it off for recycling. OPPD does this and will even pay you some small ammount of cash to do it.
