Moved to MN. Interesting observations

People from the Twin Cities area think the world revolves around the Twin Cities. They are the best at everything. Just ask them. They're like Iowa fans, but without sports.

Frankly, Minnesota sucks. Skip it and go to Canada. The fishing is way better.

Again, the broad strokes of generalizations is hilarious. Lived in MPLS for 15 years and sure there are definitely people that think their sh!t don't stink but it's like that in any city. Whether you think it's worse in MPLS than others, that's your experience and that's too bad. But the broad generalization is just flat out wrong. Unless of course you know all the millions of people in the metro...then you have a point.

Wait...so based on a comment about how one profession dresses said by one person, Minnesotans are full of themselves? Making sure I have that right because it's a laughable statement. If you're saying SOME people are full of themselves up here, sure not one person can argue that. But that also can be said about literally any city in the world. That's like me saying 'Iowans are arrogant because once I went to Iowa City and this doctor drove a car like he's from LA...man Iowans are full of themselves.' See how stupid that is?
okay, you are taking what I said out of context. You have to understand that a lot of the times people use words to point someone in a direction. So for example, if someone is frustrated with someone they might say that person "always" does that frustrating thing. Of course you could correct that person and question the use of the word always, but then you miss out on what that person was trying to communicate. So "always" was used as a word to emphasize the level frustration. It was used to say it's really bad. So in the instance I used, of course I didn't mean literally everyone was full of themselves. With that said, I did live there for 5 years, there is an attitude.

yeah I am in communications for a living and I hate when people make broad generalizations to try and make a point. Using 'always' or 'never' to try and steer someone is annoying AF. :)

Minnesotans don’t go to the Mall of America. Small town Iowans and Wisconsinites do. I lived in Minneapolis for three years and didn’t go to the Mall of America once.

Ok? So if I go to the mall of America and survey shoppers, 100% of them will be from Iowa or Wisconsin? Don't worry. I won't. Couldn't pay me enough to go to that place

Vacation Mode=I love most large cities
Retirement Mode=I could see myself living in a suburb of most large cities
Work Mode=I would have zero interest in living in a city and dealing with traffic to get to work. The traffic in places like Houston, Minneapolis, Austin, etc makes me want to kill someone. I guess it's not just work. I like driving into downtown Des Moines on a Friday or Saturday to eat or have a drink. There is no way I would do this in a large city with bad traffic.

As far a small towns, I loved the small town I was raised in. I like the people there. I can't imagine living in a small town unless it was within 15 miles of a town with at least 60k people.

Traffic in Minn/St Paul isn't that bad. Houston? Yuck.

Says the guy with Tex in his name

Ran a quick Google because none of the kids in my neighborhood are going to an Illinois school. It's kind of crazy

Per the Googles:
ISU in state - $9320/yr
ISU out of state - $24,508

Illinois in state - $15,123
Illinois out of state - $32,26

An extra $9k a year for a kid to leave Illinois for school..... totally worth the cost
Having taught at an Illinois University, especially in the last 5+ years they have really chopped aid to students so the state is not giving them any financial incentive to stay in state. Once the aid available is figured in, I bet the difference drops to a couple thousand.

I remember being in downtown Minneapolis in 1989. I met my uncle for lunch, he was a lawyer from Des Moines up there on business. He made the comment to me, "I can't stand Minneapolis lawyers, they dress and act like they are from Manhattan". So yeah, people up there are full of themselves. I lived up there for 5 years, liked it, but the people were a little arrogant, especially towards those from Iowa.
Or maybe Des Moines lawyers need to not dress like homeless bums?

I was at the Mall of America on Saturday and it was more like 25-1 in favor of the Hawkeyes apparel.

I go to every MNUFC home game, it's really fun in the stadium. I think the Vikings and Twins are "default" apparel for people who wants something but aren't huge sports fans.

COYL!

Really? You'd turn down $1M to just simply step foot in a mall? That is some kind of hate you got going there. Would love to know the reasoning. Not that I disagree...I live ten minutes from it and never go. But to say 'couldn't pay me enough to go to that place' is quite a statement. Hard to believe someone would turn down even $10k just to simply step foot in a mall.

Same for WI, MN, and IL. Freshman that meet certain academic criteria receive a tuition break of 7K-11K/yr for 4 years. $7K/yr (28K total) just for having a GPA of 3.0 in HS. Can make it even more affordable than some in state colleges and this program has been going on for 10+ years. Also get a further break if a legacy.

I was an IL kid who got that tuition break ~15 yrs ago. It was half the amount but costs have skyrocketed. Big part of the reason I came to ISU. IL in state was still $$$$$ and just as far of a drive.
