Most Physical BBall Team in Recent Memory?

As nasty as Tinsley, Nurse and Horton were my main point was to highlight how big (physical stature) this backcourt is going to be. If they adopt the same mentality that '00 squad did than watch out.

PG - Tinsley 6'3" 195 Kane 6'4" 200
SG - Nurse 5'11" 190 Thomas 6'4" 190
SF - Horton 6'1" 225 Hogue 6'6" 215

That's nearly a foot difference combined as a group. I agree the '00 squad sets the standard but D I've never seen a bigger group. Turn them into bullies Freddy!

to be fair, every backcourt ISU has ever had is likely bigger than the left group. It's one thing to have physical attributes, it's different doing it in a game.

Agree - Tyrus was all about hustle and effort. Unfortunately, he frequently did the wrong thing on D. He did it hard though...
If memory serves, it was Tyrus I would see foul a 3 point shooter in the act of shooting at least 1 time per game.

I'm not saying that Tyrus was a great defender. He was just that annoying hustle guy that gave it his all when he was out there on both ends of the court and I appreciated the effort he gave even if he made some mistakes

I don't know if anyone was as tough as Fizer. He was a bull, and didn't really have much of a facial expression. He just kind of looked ****** off all of the time.

Tyrus did have a knack for making big defensive plays late. He forced the turnover that led to Christopherson's 3 to beat Okie State. He forced Craft into a turnover late that looked like it could lead to victory. He made a big play late in the first half (if my memory is correct) against Yale that got the team going. I think he also forced a late turnover against KU at Hilton.

Some of my details might be off, but the point is, while Tyrus was not a great defender, he wasn't completely inept and made some huge plays when we needed them. That is the mark of a great player.

Tinsley-Horton locked up most everyone they guarded for a whole season.
I'm not usually a big fan of defensive slugfests but boy was that a joy to watch.
If you always have the clamps on the other squad's backcourt, you're about 90% assured of victory.

After watching youtube videos of Deandre Kane, Dustin Hogue and Richard Amardi today a quote came to mind from Mike Brey after our mathup with Notre Dame last year. He said ISU's roster was full of men. Grown men he said. Those three certainly are grown A men and they play with an attitude! Hogue and Amardi are impressive, very explosive athletes. Go watch their youtube videos if you haven't done so already. There's been a lot of discussion this week and I've gotta agree with CW my projected starting lineup is:

PG: Deandre Kane 6'4" 200 lbs
G: Matt Thomas 6'4" 190
G: Dustin Hogue 6'6" 220
F: Melvin Ejim 6'6" 230
F: Georges Niang 6'7" 245

Now no knock on Korie, Will or Tyrus from last year but they weren't exactly pit-bulls on the defensive end. I personally have never seen a more physically intimidating backcourt at ISU than what I posted above. Kane will be a bear for every point guard not named Marcus Smart. Matt Thomas might be the most physically ready guard we've had since Hoiberg. Hogue is a freak athlete and will be a lockdown defender i.e. Babb. Ejim and Niang. Let's just say I'm not worried about them. Those two boys play with their hair on fire.

I expect this team to be better than last year by season's end. That lineup is capable of some incredible defense and I think we all know we can score it at a high clip.

I'm not buying that Kane is going to be a lock down PG defender. He played SG at Marshall and he's a bigger guy. IMO he's going to struggle just as much as Lucious did with quick PGs. And Hogue and Amardi may be athletic, but to say that they're going to be great defenders straight out of JUCO is pushing it. I do think that Hogue is going to be a step up from Clyburn in that department, but Thomas is a HUGE step down from Babb defensively. This team may be better defensively than last year's, but it's not going to be a lock down group and like someone else said, they're going to HAVE to defend better because they're not going to score as much.

Big 12 Championship Oklahoma VS Iowa State1 - YouTube

I miss those days. Fred is helping ease that memory a little though.

So many turnovers in the first 5 minutes by OU. Never liked Najera. Basketball uni's were disgusting back then.

Oh Man...thanks for the memories. I watched the entire game last night. I was in the stands for this one, so it was cool to have a different perspective (Jon Sundvold and Ron Franklin). What a dominating first half. 3 minutes into the second half, JT got a little loose with the ball because the game was over. OU's guards were on lock down, completely out of sorts and OU's bigger front line was man-handled.

Sundvold started saying OU looked tired at the end of the game, and mentioned the OT game they had the night before as the reason. I am sure there may have been some of that, but I think the main reason was because they were absolutely punished by Iowa State in that game.

Man that team was fun to watch.

No lock down like Babb unless they want to play Naz for that reason, but defense as a whole will be better. I really doubt we take a big hit offensively either... This team will still be able to rain threes.

Fizer was HUGE. Imagine what we could do with a Fizer or Cato on this team...

Hoping you're wrong here. Yes, they lose a large bulk of offense (something like 50 ppg) but we lost a lot in 2011-12 also (White, Scotty C, and Allen) and responded the year after by scoring the 4th most ppg of any school in the nation. I don't think offense will be a concern at ISU so long as Hoiberg has the reins.

The highlight starting at 8:30 fits the topic of this thread perfectly. Game, set, match.
The crowd there was insane. Commentators even called it "Hilton South." Cyclone basketball was great this year, but the crowd wasn't quite that loud at the Big XII Tournament. I would love to see it get back to that level.

If Iowa State goes to KC for the tourny as the 1 seed again, I have no doubt that it will be Hilton South again.
