More Rhoads Speculation

I was VERY doubtful that this had any legs yesterday, especially after texting back and forth with a Pitt columnist and him telling me that he didn't think that Pederson would last another year at Pitt... But then, I talked to another friend in the Pitt media who talks to Rhoads from time to time. He said that Rhoads told him he had interest last time around, but didn't think the time was right as he hadn't been at Iowa State long, he wanted to see how the realignment thing worked out, and that his mother was very ill. Since then, he has exceeded expectations again at Iowa State, realignment has made it very difficult for Iowa State to succeed, and his mother has passed away so Rhoads is more receptive to outside offers...

Take it how you will, but I beleive him...

I think I just threw up a little. Here comes the giant punch to the gut.

I'm sorry.

I don't see how playing in front of 20,000 people in an NFL stadium in the ACC is better than playing in front of 70,000 people in the Big 10 or 50,000 in the Big 12. Especially when its your home, and your entire family is here.

Pitt offers no support, and if you want to talk conference stability, there is a higher likelihood of the ACC losing schools than the Big 12 at this point (SEC expansion would likely focus on the coast, Big 10 won't expand w/out ND, Pac-12 presidents/ADs have reigned in Larry Scott).

Not to de-rail your point, but I think the ACC is pretty stable, even with looming SEC expansion. I doubt that the SEC adds more than 2 teams and goes beyond 16 any time in the near future. I really think that Pitt and Syracuse were added mostly to give them a cushion when the SEC came sniffing around, so they could go back to 12 without skipping a beat. Why else wouldn't they at least be entertaining the idea of adding UConn + 1 other Big East school and completely decimating them as a competitor as both a football AND basketball conference.

Ok. So I'm just going to assume that the reason that the contract extension is taking so long is that JP is going out of his way to secure everything and anything CPR could ever ask for in the long term.

I'm hoping it isn't because CPR is pulling a chizik and making sure his buyout (if any) is nill so that he's an even hotter commodity... It doesn't fit his personality, but business is business and money can do wonders for your family. Put in the same shoes, nearly every one of us would give serious thought to a bigger paycheck.

I get offered higher-paying jobs all the time in NCAA Football '12, but I have never left Iowa State.

Actually there have been quite a few people in the media outside of Ames that have said Rhoads should stay at ISU as currently it is a better situation then what he would walk into at Pitt.

Find me one non Iowa based quote saying that.

I'm just bracing for it now. Dead serious. The other shoe had to drop, and it's going to drop harder than ever.

If Paul Rhoads left for this job, I don't know how the fanbase recovers. We're looking at mass player defections and 35,000 at Jack Trice next year.

Naww.. I LOVE LOVE LOVE CPR as much as anyone, but I feel for the first time in a long time I feel like ISU could thrive under a variety of different coaches.

CPR is important, but we can sustain without him.

He will be the most hated man in the state if he made this move. And the reason is "too chicken for a challenge" dont let the door hit you on the way out.

I understand that coaches constantly want to acheive bigger and better things. However, Rhoads has spent three years here doing extremely hard work. He's had some watershed moments, but really I think we've just seen him laying the groundwork for something potentially bigger. Why wouldn't he want to stay just a little bit longer so that he can reap what he's sown here?

I don't.

At this juncture in time, Rhoads leaving is a straight up death knell to our football program. Back to the 90s.

Truth. The fan psyche right now is good, but much to fragile to endure him leaving. It would be a long time before we would be able to buy in and give our hearts to a new head coach again.

Be prepared to get blasted. People like being in their little bubble and will attack anyone that suggests Rhoads would ever leave Ames.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why a raise and contract extension hasn't been signed yet. If the AD was giving McDermott and Chizik extensions after 2 years, what's the holdup here? If Rhoads truly doesn't "want" a raise (which I highly, highly doubt), then at least give him more years.

I think a few years down the road, he could leave with minimal damage.

But not right now.

He rallied everyone around him after Chizik bailed. The guy has become a rock star. If he leaves his freaking home after 3 years, he'll be even worse than the guy before him. If we can't keep Paul Rhoads for 3 years, we can't keep anyone worth a damn for any period of time, and ISU will never EVER have a chance at being more than a stepping stone. JP has to do absolutely everything to keep him here. Especially if we lose him to a rotting program like Pitt.

Ya it would take years to recover from this. I would like to see JP out the door too if he really cant keep a "hometown boy".

Not even close to the 90s. There were a mountain of reasons we had issues in the 90s. Coaching was a small part of that. ADs not caring, treading water, and sanctions were bigger issues than coaching then.

This. We wouldn't pony up $2 million+ for an established head coach or a rising star so unless JP hit another home run with a coordinator not many people have heard of (because those are the only people who would likely come for $1.1 million), we would be taking a GIANT step back and a huge risk to continuing moving ISU football forward.

CPR has done REALLY nice things here. I just think a lot of coaches could lead a record of 18-19 like CPR has if given the job at ISU.

Dont get me wrong. I want him here.. I really want him here.

I know 18-19 is very below average for a Big 12 school, but it is more of the direction we are going as a program that makes you want CPR to stay. Nobody wants to lose their coach when they are on the uptick.

But if after another 6-6,5-7 season.. it would be interesting to see if everyone felt the same way.

We have no idea what has been discussed between Pollard and CPR. For all we know an offer is on the table.
