Morbid post alert (apologies)

IIRC it was spring 1988 - freshman year - living in Friley. A guy and a girl were on a motorcycle westbound on Lincoln way. We could hear the girl screaming which caused us to look out the window just in time to see the motorcycle slam into the rear end of a car at the Welch Ave/Lincoln Way intersection. The female passenger flew so far we almost couldn't believe our eyes. Apparently he was running from police and she was screaming for him to stop. I think he lived but she was DOA.

I was walking past Cy's Roost one day circa 1984 or so and cops were around a Jeep out front, putting up tape. Jeep had lots of parking tickets on window. Illinois plates as I recall. There was an awful stench in the air. Turns out, the vehicle owner had gotten drunk and decided to sleep it off in back of Jeep, apparently choked on vomit and died. It was days before he was found, because the plastic fabric windows were scratched/clouded, couldn't see in. Thousands of students unknowingly walked right past the corpse. Anyone else remember that?
Yeah, I remember that. Wasn't it around the corner on Chamberlain by the Italian place? I never walked past but that is what I remember.

Nope, and it gets kinda burned into your mind. My thoughts probably wander to that accident a few times a week.
I’ll never forget, now not something I saw but about 12 years ago I interviewed to be a 911 dispatcher. Well they bring you in after initial interviews to listen to calls to see if you can handle listening to them. They were gradually getting worse and the last one was teenage kids that drove too fast in a developing area near grimes long ago. The truck went off the road and nosedived into the ditch by a tree. 2 of the 3 kids got out but the other was stuck under the wheel and the door was jammed then the hood caught on fire and the remainder of the call was the kids crying and the kid that was stuck screaming as he burned alive, it was awful.

Of course.

Just wanted to chime in and say if anyone is struggling dealing with some of the things they have seen there are a lot of resources and groups out there for those looking to talk or get some help. Doesn’t matter how long ago it happened, how bad it was, etc if you feel like you could use some help processing it please reach out to someone. Everyone processes things differently, doesn’t make anyone weak or lesser for needing some help.

Had a strange late afternoon. We found our neighbor dead in her backyard across our alley. It was so...strange. I haven't ever seen a dead body in the real/ongoing world. Hospitals and stuff yes. But life going on around, cars driving by and people walking dogs. It was just...so sad and surreal. It's also nearly 100 degrees and she was definitely in the sun all day from the looks of things. She had the garden hose in her hand and the backdoor was ajar and tv was on. Likely she just went out back to water plants/flowers in this drought and either had a heat stroke or heart attack on the spot. Have you ever found a person deceased before?

That's crazy.

Last week I was driving home late afternoon and as I was driving by my one neighbor I noticed a guy laying in the yard on his back. I thought it was really weird for 3 in the afternoon, thought he might have been doing yard work and had a heart attack. So I called my wife and told her because I didn't know if I should do something. Then I parked my car and looked back over there and he was walking around. I guess the guy just wanted to lay in his yard for a bit.

As I recall, the guy's Jeep was parked on west side of Welch directly in front of and just several steps from the entrance to Cy's Roost. It seemed hard to believe that a dead body had been there in the back of that Jeep for days, but that is what happened.

Pretty sure me and my buddy had the DNR worried at one point when we were dragging a buck I shot over a mile out of Chichaqua and decided to lay down on the levee to rest. We were wiped, but the DNR plane circled over us multiple times. I'm sure they thought we were dead.

When I was a first responder I been to a couple DOA scenes. Also a few years ago a house a few doors down a husband stabbed his wife and she ran out into the front yard. When I came home from work they were loading her up and police were going door to door.

As a first responder/volunteer firefighter, for the last 20 years, I've seen things that hopefully most of us wont ever have to witness. We had a presentation from a gentelman that owned a funeral home, and was also on a national volunteer board of morticians. He had worked all sorts of national, and international, incidents like the Sioux City Flight 232 crash, Flight 801 in Guam, all the way up to 9/11. His message was that some of us are able to seperate the things we see at a incident site and go on with our daily lives with out much disprution, and some are witness to a single event and know they can't. He also stressed the importance of finding an outlet if its bothering you, as most all of us with get "full" of seeing these things over time, and that it is ALRIGHT to walk away from those duties to give your mental health the attention it needs. It was one of the most refreshing talks I have been apart of!

I was back in my hometown over break a few years ago. I was driving down Main Street when I was passed by a car doing at least 90-100 mph (this was in a 35 mph zone). I crested a hill just in time to see the guy’s car go under the frame of a large garbage truck passing through the intersection. The collision took off the roof of the car, along with most of the driver’s head.

I was walking an elderly lady, with a known heart condition, at her home, outside, Nice and easy, slow, with her walker, and not too far, when she collapsed. I did CPR, I think I broke one of her ribs, she never came to. It was horrible! It was during a time when I was doing Home Health as a PT.

Respect for that (your) job!

I was a twelve year old delivering the Des Moines Tribune, an afternoon newspaper in the late 1970’s. There was an old man who lived in a tidy home down an alley at the edge of our small town - no nearby neighbors. I opened the screen door to throw in the paper and noticed three days worth laying there untouched. As I stood there considering the situation, a horrible smell wafted out. I knew he was dead but didn’t go in - rode my bike to his only known friend’s house and told him. Though I didn’t actually see him, it was still creepy for a kid…
Are you Johnny Gosch? If so, I know some people looking for you….

Now I'm terrified to just lay in my year. Nice fall or spring day with a good breeze. It's great to just lay down and listen.
