Michigan's Jon Horford transferring

He only avg'd 4/4 in 14min but he was under utilized. I think the biggest question I would have is how much would he really get to contribute for us with nothing remarkable that stands out other than height. Even with height, he isn't killing it on the boards so I don't see him taking time from Niang, Hogue and the new guys.

Call me crazy, but I can see Turner joining SMU to play next to Mudiay. I don't know how much playing time Turner will get with Alexander, Ellis, Mickelson, Traylor.
 
I'd be fine with taking Horford. It would literally be as if Percy were still here, but lost weight, grew a couple inches, and gained athleticism, defensive ability, and motivation. And I think that is being kind.

I'm not seeing this one.

It looks like he's leaving for more playing time, and with the frontcourt we already have I don't know how he'd get enough minutes here for him to consider ISU.

I think he would be a nice player to have coming off the bench for those times that Niang gets in to foul trouble. However, I think he'll probably want to be a starter somewhere

Based on the video from the UCLA game, at the very least his career game is better than Edozie's career game, and he is bigger (for going against Ridley and KU posts). That was not a year's worth of data- just one game, maybe not even his best- and it showed better hands, feet, and touch imo.

It is not a slam dunk though. Imo there are two questions:
1.) what is the opportunity cost?
If the other choice to bank two scholarships, I think he would be a great addition. Imo, we could have used him this past season for 10-15 minutes a game, and next year we have the same or bigger need first semester.
Unless...
2.) How does the staff feel about Edoize as a 20 minute a game guy? If they think he will be improved enough to play a bigger role 1st semester and when we are getting hurt by size, then we are probably not interested.

He might not be interested in Iowa State, but we should be I think.

There are minutes to be earned. Assuming Nader/Hogue/Niang start at the 3/4/5 during non-conference play, Edozie is the only backup post player, and really Hogue and Nader are better suited at the 3 and not the 4. Horford would beat out Edozie as the first post of the bench and get 15-20 minutes a game in non-conference easy. If he proved himself capable, he'd earn playing time all season.

Also, I don't think McKay is a great 3 point shooter. So if he plays next year, he won't stretch out the defense quite as much as we've been used to. I have no doubt that Fred will figure out how to use McKay, but during the non-conference season, we'll likely have shooters at every spot on the floor. Making a transition like that mid-season could cause problems. If Horford were on the team during non-con, the team would get used to playing with 1 guy who is not as much of an outside threat, making the transition to McKay easier.

I love Edozie, but I'd definitely feel much more comfortable with Horford as the first post player off the bench.
 
The only benefit I see is he could play immediately and he could play 5-10 mins per game and not be much of a liability on the court. However, there will likely be better players available and I don't think he fills a critical hole that would give him the PT he probably wants.
 
I'm a Michigan fan so I'll chime in a little. This is weird to me. Some expected this to happen last year with Morgan and McGary both back. Right now, McGary is really the only true post player they have. Mark Donnal is a stretch four and the recruits name escapes me but he was expected to redshirt. There was probably 10-15 minutes for him to be had on a very quality team. If he wants more, he won't be playing on a very good team, IMO. So, his skillset. He's a pretty traditional center. He has good, not great athletic ability, is a good shot blocker, but overall a mediocre defender. Morgan was clearly the option when Michigan needed post defense. He finishes well and has shown to be able to knockdown a mid range jumper if they will let him have it. Like Morgan, he didn't fit the offensive system but wasn't a liability on either end of the court. So, would I take him at ISU? Probably as the last scholarship. I think he's better than Percy would have been and probably offers more than Edozie at this point. I do think Edozie could be better in a year. We can talk about a loaded front line but as many guys as we have there, only one has shown to be a very good rebounder and he's 6'6. McKay will be great, IMO, but piling a guy like Horford in there on just a one year commitment isn't the worst thing. I don't think he will even look at ISU. It's a similar overall system in that it's perimeter oriented and doesn't cater to a guy like him.

LOL. He scored one more point on 3 less shots than Niang. He's incredibly efficient. 10 shots a game isn't very many for a guy that had a 47/44/82 season.

It wouldn't be a bad thing to have Horford until McKay is able to play in December. But I don't think he would get many minutes after that. Probably not what he is looking for.

Agree, our interest comes down to the other options and how they feel Edozie will improve. We could use him though.
Will he be interested in ISU? Probably not, but that is due to fit more than PT imo.
