MetroNet Ames

So, when you say anything outside of their fiber network is awful, that's basically any internet site you visit or streaming Netflix, etc?
It is fast enough that I have not noticed much from streaming sites etc. But I have had it less than two weeks also and the TV side has kept me busy and I have not spent much excess time exploring the internet side.
I do know that if you test the speed on sites other than MicroNet (I have tried six) the results are much lower than the MicoNet speed calculator shows.

What download speeds are you seeing at peak times? We are looking to switch since Mediacom just jacked the rates up on us, but I don't want to go backwards on speed. We currently get 100mbs, which is good enough for us.

I am supposed to have 500 mb. MetroNet always shows slightly above 500 (I have not had it long enough to have tested a lot of different times of the day).
The other speed testers will be 1/2 to 2/3 of the 500. Still faster than mediacom. MetroNet says you have to use their speed test to get an accurate reading, which is more than likely BS.

I have century link but just installed the Google Nest mesh system. Google Home App speed test says 136/19 on speed test but when I run other speed test it is always 30ish/19. I know my wifi is running faster then 30ish though.

I've had MetroNet for a couple of weeks now in Ames. I have mostly good things to say. I consistently get the speeds I'm paying for (200 mbps up and down). They were down for about an hour yesterday which was not great timing, but I remain optimistic. Overall, I'm happy with how things are going unless the outages become a consistent problem.

I’m not impressed with Metronet at this point. The tv looks gray and washed out compared to Mediacom. The speed test is 200 up and down like it’s supposed to be but watching the women’s game last night on ESPN + was torture. I think I restarted it 4 times. I’m going to watch another on ESPN + tonight if it’s as bad I’m taking it back. Their customer service has been great though

I never did make the switch. I will say though, that my Mediacom performance has increased dramatically since Metronet came online and took some pressure off of Mediacom's infrastructure.

How much of it that was the internet vs ESPN+ servers? I am not an expert in this area, but it could be an issue on ESPN+ end.

I think my Mediacom has gotten better as well, they also upgraded speeds so I get the 1 gig service for the same price I was paying for 500.

We live out in the country and we don’t have mediacom or metornet and it did the day to us it restarted and “loaded” a few times and was a bit glitchy too. So I would say it had nothing to do with the internet and more so with ESPN + it’s done that pretty much with everything I’ve watch on there . Heck the other night I was waiting at my sons practice watching the end of the Baylor game on my phone and it got stuck on the last trick in bounds play and it didn’t come back till the game was over.

Yeah, I have had similar issues with ESPN's online streaming in the past as well. But just wanted to point that out there that it may not be the internet, and may be the streaming service.

My ESPN+ comes in perfectly. Nice HD picture and I can watch it on any of my devices or all of them at the same time if I want to. I've got Medicom 1000/100/10 and no problems. It consistently clocks at 135/20. Internet was $70 now it's $80/mo. That's here in Altoona. Mediacom treats Altoona nice since we're special. :)

edit: just checked and I'm getting $5/mo discount on the internet so it's now $75/mo.

I’ve had metronet for a couple months now. Zero issues, the fast speeds I was promised (I have 200 upload and download), cheaper than mediacom. I 100% recommend especially if you aren’t using mediacom TV.

those issues with ESPN+ people are complaining about is a device or server issue, not an internet service provider issue.

Edit: Metronet also doesn’t cap you, which has been an issue for us with mediacom for years.

MetroNet is coming to Johnston over the next year. I currently use Mediacom for TV and Internet. What are people in Ames paying for Internet only?

I have mi-fiber. Different fiber company but metronet and mi-fiber use the same Aureon fiber backbone.
I have the 100/100 for $59.99 plus rental charge, it comes out to $70/month. (we don't need any more than that with just 2 of use and a baby).

My Mediacom in Ames is $50/month for 100/10 service. Supposed to be $63 but I own my own modem and router so I get $13/month off.

Metronet quoted me $60/month for 200/200 + a $10 non-negotiable "Tech Fee" even if you provide your own hardware.

The performance of my Mediacom has improved enough recently that I'm content sticking with it and saving $20/month. If it starts going downhill again I will have to re-evaluate. I will also note that we do not have a large family, so at this time the 1000GB Mediacom data cap is not an issue for us.
