Isn't it North Carolina basketball that retires jerseys, not jersey numbers? Why can't we do the same? Let's stop being so stingy in acknowledging the players that have made such great contributions. As of right now Iowa State does not retire jersey numbers.
I think that is what we do at ISU for basketball at least. I don't think we do that for football, but we definitely could.Isn't it North Carolina basketball that retires jerseys, not jersey numbers? Pretty sure ISU's policy is that they have to graduate, and have to be in the Cyclone Hall of Fame in order to qualify. It takes a minimum of 10 year to be in the Hall of Fame if I remember corrrectly.I think they have to get into the hall of fame first. We’ve run into this in basketball over the last few years.
We won the Big 12 in 2020. We finished the season with the best record in the conference and everyone played everyone.
From 2011-2016 that meant you got to call yourself the Big 12 champ. So **** it, we won the Big 12. We also won the Fiesta Bowl.
Brock Purdy is worthy of getting his jersey retired. The only thing is that he shares that number with one of the other all time greats.
I'm pretty sure the numbers are retired at ISU - at least that is what has happened thus far.I think that is what we do at ISU for basketball at least. I don't think we do that for football, but we definitely could.
According to this article they don't retire numbers. Maybe the programs just doesn't use them out of respect. Wasn't there a big curfuffle when Breece wore 28 because he was the first since the Davis brothers? Sort of an unofficial retirement.I'm pretty sure the numbers are retired at ISU - at least that is what has happened thus far.
14 was retired for Hornacek and Wegner,
20 was retired for Thompson,
32 was retired for Hoiberg
35 for Abdul-Aziz and Stevens
44 for Grayer
I've heard some say the numbers aren't retired but nobody has worn any of these jersey numbers since the retirement ceremony.
I'm not a fan of retiring numbers for football. There are already more players than available numbers, why compound the problem? Retire a jersey and maybe not use it for a decade or so after the jersey ceremony but don't retire the number for good.
Yeah, I've seen that article. As far as I know that is the only source saying they aren't retired but it does sow some doubt. This Iowa State University AD document talks about retired jerseys on the top of p. 67 but then says retired numbers on the caption of the photo on the bottom of p. 69.According to this article they don't retire numbers. Starts around 4:30 markDoes anyone have any better full coverage of the Seneca tribute and where the band formed like the run and he ran through? All I ever saw was a tiny bad quality clip on "X".
Pretty cool to get them both back in same year.
