Men's BB Expectations

I think we end up with just 12 or 13 wins. We have the most depleted roster. I would be very impressed with .500 or better, but I just don't see it. We will lose at UNI, at Iowa, vs Bradley, at Minnesota, at Ohio State, and the majority of big 12 games. I don't see us winning a single road game.

I enjoy the optimistic attitudes many of you share, but to expect a postseason tournament is a little over the edge. We have the most turnover of players, other than KSU, an all new backcourt, an undersized frontline, and a lack of Big XII experience. If we are even close to .500 I will be thrilled. I want to see great team play, great team defense, and hustle on the floor. That, to me, would be a successful season. If all that happens, then Hilton Magic will appear once again and maybe, just maybe, we will upset a heavyweight at home.

I'm actually pretty excited about the MBB season... I also think they will do better than expected. GMac teams tend to be well disciplined and have solid play so I think that will huge for ISU this year... I wouldnt expect to see the players out at Element and such before and after games as much this year as last. but then again, after the football season winning any games would be nice... but I'd see NIT as a pretty obtainable goal.

I think it all depends on the guard play. We return last year's frontcourt and I expect Ross, Jiri, and Rahshon will all do very well under GMac and their play should improve. Hopefully the Johnsons both come in ready to play as well. How well Dunson, Taylor, and McIntosh play will dramatically affect the season. If they play clean, turn-over free basketball and tough defense, I don't see any reason why we wouldn't go .500+. I don't expect the new guards will score as much as Stinson and Blalock did, but then, I don't expect they'll have to for us to win.

Bottom line : I expect we'll play above our "potential" and go something like 16-17 wins, about 6-10 in conference play. I'd be very pleased with an NIT berth.

sorry i dont consider the NIT that great

I certainly do not feel NIT is worthy anymore wither due to recent changes. NCAA or nothing - this should be achievable unless we again are too bigheaded about our prospects. .

My expectations are to see hard play and some competitive games. I want to win, but I don't care as long as I see some competitiveness out there on the floor. It will be a welcome sight after the football season.

I am bouncing off of the walls with excitement for Friday night, I just am beside myself wanting to get back into Hilton again. I don't care if they are a sub-par team this year, there is going to be a different attitude in the Coliseum this season. Maybe a few sparks of the magic will come back as well, we can only hope so!

I honestly have no idea. This team has the capability to finish in the top 5 teams in the Big 12 if things went their way. They could also be one of the bottom 3 teams.

Maybe that's why I'm so excited for the season...expectations are low and there is a fresh air inside Hilton.

Friday will be here soon!

I think those of you suggesting we're going to the NCAA tournament are downright crazy.

I think we'll be about the same record as last year, 16-14, 17-14, something like that. We'll play tougher and defend home better, but we flat out do not have the talent to get to the tournament. I would love to think that was different, but I doubt it.

I think next year we'll see improvement but still not make the tourney, and then in 2008 we'll easily make the tournament and we'll consider years where we don't make the tourney serious down years. It takes a while to build a program McD's way, but he'll do it and we'll all be thankful for it down the road.

I have to agree with Bryce. Anyone EXPECTING an NCAA bid needs to get their head checked. Optimism is fine, but it needs to be tempered with realistic expectations, otherwise you just get frustrated. If we do somehow make it to the NCAA's, even as a #13 seed, McDermott should be given a lifelong contract and the keys to the city.

I think an NIT bid is within reach, but is by no means probable. And anyone who would look down at their nose at an NIT bid at the end of the season with the type of turnover this program had in the spring needs to get their heads checked.

I think we need to be realistic. The NIT is a real stretch. I think 15 wins is hopeful. I'm usually optimistic about basketball, but at the same time realistically I've seen ISU teams with more talent end up with 15 wins or less.

As I recally Larry Eustasy only won 16 games his first season and there was NO post season. I think you are right on with 15 wins this season.:biggrin9gp:

I don't know if you guys have watched much of the stuff on Cyclones.com, but when the season is 3 days away and your coach is saying stuff like "We've got a long way to go" you better start tempering your expectations.

I would actually give us a much better chance to beat Minnesota on the road than I would beating UNI on the road. Minnesota is going to be down this year, and UNI returns a talented frontcourt, plus they'll be very high emotionally for the game.
