my frau is a principal for a christian academy in the rio grande valley.
one of her teachers was diagnosed with meningitis on thursday. i do not know whether
it is viral or bacterial meningitis. has anyone ever had meningitis in your family?if so what precautions should be taken in handling the spread of infection to the rest of the people in her school.thanks for any ideas..

Had the bacterial version about 15 yrs ago. Not fun. The hospital took care of contacting my co-workers, family etc, and told them what they needed to do. I can't recall the name of the drug though.

I had Meningitis when I lived in New Mexico. It sucks. Really, really sucks. Mine was Viral and they tried to type match it to known strains and were unsuccessful. Imagine one of the worst migraines you've ever had -> 24/7 for 3 months. Seriously.

I was in the hospital for 5 days and almost caused a Riot because I threw a fit and threatened to beat people up if they didn't release me. Yes, I was treated that badly. My immune system got so knocked out, that I had flare up of Shingles and it infected one of my eyes and they refused to treat it. Seriously bad ****. I still have impaired vision in my right eye and it happened in 2004. If I didn't hate lawyers so ******* bad I would have sued them.

Viral and Bacterial Meningitis are very different. Bacterial can be deadly and is highly contagious. Viral is rarely deadly and not contagious. If I understand that correctly anyway. One of the reasons I was so ****** was 3 days after I was admitted, after they identified it as viral, and did an unsuccessful type match they transferred me to a different hospital ... who then put me in an isolation ward !!!

I was glad to be transferred though, I was in such pain they put me on a pain-killer cocktail and was so drugged that I didn't realize that my IV had come loose and blood was spewing out all over me. The nurses refused to come when I punched the ******* button, so I got up and walked into the hallway and started screaming !!!

Oh, the way they identify what type it is, is to do a Spinal Tap ... which is inserting a needle into your Spinal Cord and withdrawing fluid. You would scream but your head hurts so ******* bad, by that time you don't care and just wish somebody would blow your brains out. They then analyze the fluid and send it out for "matching". In my case "no match" so I was ****ed and had to let it "run its course".

This ranks right up there with the worst time of my life; and no you don't want to know the worst.

This sounds like a horror movie...
And now I must say, I am interested in what the worst was.

As you know there are 2 types which are very different. Bacterial can kill you and is contagious but is treatable. Viral is not contagious, usually does not kill you, and in many cases (like mine) is not treatable. You need to do some research and its very easy to do on the internet. Or talk to a medical professional.

There were rumors that Viral could be spread like West Nile or via Mosquitoes but I'm pretty sure that was proven wrong. Actually, I'm almost positive that it cannot be spread that way. I do know that Bacterial can be spread though, so if that is the diagnosis then beware and take precautions. But the authorities should take appropriate measures if that is the case, so you would probably be notified.

Good luck.

A friend of mine with bacterial meningitis had to have fluid drained from his spine three times so that the swelling did not wreck his brain...dangerous stuff.

My uncle died of bacterial meningitis at a naval base during WWII, less than 12 hours after becoming ill. Now, I think they can at least treat with antibiotics, but it was pretty drastic then. My grandparents received no personal effects back because they burned everything he had been in contact with.

There was also an ISU student who passed away 2 years ago from meningitis. He went out for a few drinks and started feeling under the weather, went home and tried to sleep it off, woke up feeling worse, he eventually went to the hospital and died 4 hours later.

As students we were told not to worry if we had no direct contact with him but the best thing to do as stated above was to wash our hands more frequently.

Isn't there some age correlation with this as well? Seems like I remember hearing it tends to be more of an issue in teens and twenties?
