What makes you think he can coach? Just wondering. Is it all of these set plays that he has that work everytime? Is it the solid man defense that the team plays? Is it the smart heads up things that you see our players do out there on the court? Is it the drive and hustle that you see our team have to rebound the ball and get the loose ones?

Are we really going to have three new threads about whether or not McD should get fired after EVERY loss? I don't see this stuff coming up right after we win a game.

It's a chance for people to feel like they've said something important, when we're really all the same people saying the same things over and over.
Would it really matter what I said? Probably not. He has proven that he can coach at other levels. Yes, they were smaller schools, but he was winning with talent that was comparable to the talent they were beating. He has done a lot of winning here with talent that is sub-par to the competition's talent. Yes, that can be blame that you can put on him, but some of it was a lot of crap out of his control. (I'm sure this will be the point you hang your hat on.)
I'm not into looking up the stats, but I would say that our team defensive stats have been pretty good all four years with said talent.
Concede on BB IQ that the team has. This goes to the recruiting point, getting players with talent and maybe not the highest BB IQ hoping that you can coach that. He's recruiting what he can, and it seems to be getting better each year.
I do see hustle, but frankly after being an athlete, I know that it's a whole lot easier to hustle when you feel it helps. When the attitude around you is bad, then you will not work your butt off. If the players spend any time on this board I can assure you that they will never work for you or most on this board. Why should they, if they do work hard and still lose you will be calling for their coach's head. Why would you play hard for somebody that you think will be gone anyway?
Coach could be a great motivator during practice and the kids may feel ready to kick some arse, then they go home and listen to all of the negative crap they read everywhere they look. How should they respond? You guys act like bailing on the coach after our first loss is going to help ANYTHING. How will any of this help anything? It won't, we are a bunch of random tough guys behind keyboards spewing crap!
All this Stinson, Blaylock talk is irrelevant. I think majority of the fans were willing to give Mac a pass on the first couple years. The key point is he has had his chance to get his playes in and build the program. Barring a recruiting miracle or someone being way better then advetised like WJ was i see no way we have a more talented team then we have this year in the next few years to come. If we can't get it done now, what does that say for the future?

I pointed out on a previous thread that McDermott did not have the luxury of recruiting the previous coach's players, like Wayne Morgan, or having the previous coach leave for an NBA job and be recommended to staff and players by that coach, like Eustachy.

I don't disgree with a lot of what you said except a couple things you said. Considering he has NEVER beaten a team here at ISU that he wasn't supposed to beat, I think he has done ZERO winning with talent that is sub-par to the opponent. Unless you think that Drake has more talent then us this year or Nebraska. And if that's the case, then we got big issues.
Also I disgree with the fact that I am a random tough by spewing crap behind a keyboard. I will spew crap in person, I don't care who hears me. I don't take a bucket of chum and my flip-flops with me everywhere for no reason.

I'm pretty sure we have upset a team in his four years. No, we haven't beaten a team that was ranked at the time, but we have beaten teams that were ranked before or after we played them.
I think all of us speak a lot differently on here then we would talking to Coach or his players, that's what I meant. I have posted more today and yesterday than I have in a long time, and it's solely for the purpose of negating some of the negativity. (Pun?) I just don't see that us being SO negative does anything to help the situation. Most, I would believe, think that being so adamant with their faith in our team helps our AD to make a tough decision to remove the coach. I highly doubt that it does and it does nothing but create a bad atmosphere for our team to work in.
That's all I'm saying... :wink:

The Nebraska win was Mcdermott's 15th conference win as ISU's head coach now in his fourth season.
Five of those wins have been against the doormat of the Big 12 conference, the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Beating Nebraska in basketball is meaningless.
The day Mcdermott pulls his first upset as head coach of ISu I'll celebrate.
Four years, and I'm still waiting.
We are years and years behind in recruiting top 5 Big 12 talent players.

This is were I get torn in two.
I was a big time poster back a few times saying Mac needed time to make the program his - to get his players in - to get things going his way. I'd have to go back to my old post but it seems like I kept saying 3-4 years..........
Not sure how long I can keep adding on to that :sad:

I'm sticking behind Mac for the rest of the season, but if we don't make the Big Dance, I'll be hoping for JP to make a change. There's no point in calling for a coach's head in the middle of the season, especially when all is not yet lost. Making the NIT (which I think is most likely right now) would be a disappointment considering where our expectations were, but that would probably be enough for me to give him another year.
Some people here have a very inflated view of our basketball program; as if they think we're somebody like KU or UK or UCLA. Even in our "Glory Years", our greatest accomplishments are a few conference titles, ONE trip to the Elite Eight and being on the losing end of one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history. Yes, we had some very good years, and I'm not trying to diminish that. But we were horribly inconsistent. Orr's teams were terrible on the road. 3 out of Larry's 5 years we were 9th or worse in the Big 12. It's hard to have success here, especially consistent and sustained success.
That said, we are still good enough of a program that we should be able to get to some sort of post-season tournament at least once in four years. If we don't make it this year, then ultimately the coaching staff's jobs will have to be in question. But there are still a couple months left in this season, and with this team. We have to wait and see, and cheer for them for the rest of the year, before we decide to fire Coach (and especially before we start talking about replacements for him...).

I would say something, but my opinion means squat in this fight. Jamie Pollard set the bar fairly high when he fired the coach who took us to the second round of the NCAA tourney (with a bench shorter than what MacDermott is dealing with here) AND to the Final Four of the NIT.
Right now, we're looking at four straight years of the ISU basketball team watching the NCAA tourney on TV just like the rest of us. By Pollard's own standards, we should be looking to make a change....but we won't, because the only number that matters here is a date, not a won-loss record.
