McCarney to Iowa?

Norm Parker has been at Iowa as D-Coord. the whole time Ferentz has been the coach. And he has done a great job. Iowa has had some great defensives. Just look at Roth, Sanders, Baubineux all being high NFL draft picks. Some Hawk fans may want him gone, but does Kirk?

I think North Texas just fired their head coach. I don't know if Dan would want to coach for a team that's not in a BCS conference, but I have to imagine that a lower profile team like that would be very interested in having him as their next coach.

Re: McCarney to Iowa

Unfair statement, trust me NOONE wanted Mac to succeed more than I did, he is the coach of my favorite team. However with the way this team has performed, not just this year but the recurring incidents of horrible game management, states clearly that he wasn't the guy that was going to meet up to the new expectations that Iowa State as an athletic department NOW has.

I agree 100%

Kind of pointless for anyone to argue otherwise as JP clearly took action and Mac is no longer coach. It's not bashing Mac to agree with what JP did or to agree that MAC was not an effective Coach in the W-L record. In the end Mac did not get the job done. End of discussion. This does not make anyone a "Mac basher". These are the facts, :yes4lo:

Re: McCarney to Iowa

Mac's ties to Iowa City are a lot tighter than many think. Even of recent years. He owns property there. It is his hometown and he has been seen there countless times in the offseason over the last 15 (going back to wisky days) years. There is no evil subplot to Mac being secretly in Iowa City collaborating with Iowa. He was a cylone first and formost. He is loyal to ISU but unilike many of us he doesn't see being loyal to ISU and UofI as problematic. His daughter is/was a student at UI and it has even been highlighted in newpaper articles about her been the daughter of cross state rivals coach. The UofI still consideres Dan family. It is different than when gable came fromISU to Iowa. Mac is born and bred in Iowa City his parents hail from there and I for one am convinced that he gets the same sentimental feeling going home that I do when I return to my hometown. The difference Mac is a hometown hero in Iowa City. He marred his image by becoming ISUs coach in many Hork fans but most would never blame him for taking a job at a big time shcool in a bigtime conf. They recognize a winner when they see one similarly to ISU when they hired him. he would be welcomed with open arms. Norm Parker is old and of poor health. I wouldn't be totally shocked if Mac didn't make the move. However I think odds are against it. He is head coach material.

Contrary to popular belief, Mac isn't beloved by all hawk fans and athletic department personnel; personal problems prior to his departure for Madison caused them some embarassment. He didn't treat his first wife very well, and she was close friends with the young wives of other assistant coaches back in the day. A few of those people might presently be involved with the program! While it's not much more than a hunch, I'll eat the Cyclone hat I'm wearing if DMac ends up on KF's staff in IC. Also, while Norm Parker might be nearing retirement, there's a younger Parker on staff who'd probably step seamlessly into the role. Finally, I'd opine that it's more likely he'd end up back at Wisconsin in some capacity than EIU... As far as I know, Alvarez and Bielema actually like DMac...

Why Wish Anything but the Best for Mac!

Mac was a class individual until the end. He appreciates the opportunity & time he had in Ames.

At the end I think he realized that after 12 years he couldn't energize the Cyclone fan base & that the inconsistency within his program had worn on the Cyclone fan base.

Very few coaches can last more than 8-10 years and keep things fresh. KU fans were becoming more disenchanted with Roy Williams who will go down as one of the greatest coaches of this era. We're even starting to hear rumblings from the Hawk nation about Ferentz. His days of walking on water are over and how long has he been at Iowa, 8 years?

I hope Mac gets what he wants in the future. If he becomes a coach at Iowa that would be great homecoming for him & I hope he does well every Saturday except when he plays the Clones.

I see Mac follwing the Terry Allen career path. Hook on with a Division 1 school as an assistant and wait for a while to see if any D1 school offers a head coaching position. If not, move to a smaller school as head coach.

Dude, you make things way more complicated than what reality is. In the end Mac could not WIN. That is all.

Re: McCarney to Iowa

My point, Darts, is that you seem to carry a grudge against Mac, even after it's all done, and he is on his way out. I would just like to see a little credit given to the man. Maybe you have, and I haven't caught the posts, but almost all posts that I've seen from you have been very negative, even in some of the positive threads where people are trying to remember the good things that Mac brought to the program.

No I have no ill will against Mac, in fact, I was thrilled that this team FINALLY showed some heart and sent him out with a win. I was there too, to cheer him off the field one last time, because I know that he worked hard. Although I felt, and still feel that he is a poor game manager, and tactician, I appreciate the fact that has by and large been the face of the Iowa State athletic department for many years.

My point of contention with many on this board is in the people here trying to make him into something he isn't. He finished his time at Iowa State 29 games under .500, despite the fact that he was given every opportunity, plus 10 to prove he could win consistently. He NEVER did that. 1/2 of his tenure we were that last place team in the conference.

I do not know Dan McCarney personally, I have only broken bread with him at Cyclone Club functions. He says all the right things, to all the right people, which is why we hear all of this nonsense about how this is the best we can ever hope to do, that is a DIRECT result from the way that Mac has presented himself to the national media. That also pisses me off.

I don't need to know any coach of my teams as long as I can watch and see that the right things are being done, and as bad as this, and many other Cyclone teams have been, fundementally, there is no way that the right things were being done.
