Niang is going to be lost to the NBA draft at the end of this season, though.

I love Niang, but his game is much more suited for the college level. Let's just say he gets the absolute most out of his athletic ability. He doesn't have the speed, agility or vertical to sniff an NBA roster. He is one of the most "crafty" scorer I have ever seen in college ball though. And that's why he is one of my all time favorites.

I think there's a place for him on an nba roster one day. It won't be for defense. He could be a guy you bring in for some instant offense & spell one of the starters for a few minutes. Since he's a marginal nba player great deal for us to get him for 4 years.

I have noticed a huge change and improvement in Niang's play already this year. The off season treated him well. He isn't gifted athletically and knows that. Fred knows that too. I'm guessing Fred is telling him what he needs to work on to get to the next level. I have noticed his passing for example. He has to be near the top of the list for assists on our team so far this year. He won't dazzle anybody, but if he has incredible ability to pass around the post, step outside and hit a three, play defense without fouling, rebound, and get lucky being crafty around the basket on smaller defenders, I think he has a shot to contribute in the NBA at some point if he continues to work hard and listen to Fred. That being said, i believe he will be here next year and probably his senior year.

Does Nader have two to play? Thought he was one and done next year

Nader has two years with us. I was pleasantly made aware of this a few weeks ago. For some reason I also thought he was going to be a senior.

This years team has Big 12 Championship and beyond potential.

Next years team has Elite 8 and beyond potential.

Lets see what this years team brings, but I agree these next two years, even three really, are going to be very special.

I don't think you lose Kane and Ejim and get better next year.

They're too important. There will be a drop off.

I'd take Kane or Ejim over Vaughn next year if the NCAA would allow it.

Heard this before.

I tend to agree, but at this time last year Kane was not a Cyclone. I hope FH gets an impact transfer to go with Vaughn.

We've never had to only replace 2 significant players in Hoiball, usually it's more like 3-5 key contributors. We could hypothetically replace one of them with a lottery pick caliber. McKay and Nader have a ton of upside even if Fred doesn't bring in another guy. Naz, Morris and Thomas have a ton of upside to keep improving.

If we don't land RV and we don't add any other key players, I'll expect a slight dropoff but not major. Otherwise I see us as the #2 program in the Big 12 as of next year.

"There will be a drop off" is heard in the exact same ratio as, "They'll all be better with another year of development".

Kane will be difficult to replace but you are losing one good Combo guard and adding 1 year experience to his back up Morris, Naz, Thomas, Bluford, and SDW plus adding another top 150 player in Custer. Right there you would say we are better at the guard spot this year. This is not including if Vaughn signs and potentially having Thomas who starts the whole season now coming off the bench.

As far as Ejim goes, he will be replaced with both McKay and Nader. Nader has been rumored to be the best player in practice so far this year and there was talk that when McKay practiced with the team he dominated. McKay adds a level of athleticism that has not been at Iowa State for a long time. There is very real chance that Hogue will be coming off the bench once McKay is eligible. This will go along with Niang, Hogue, and Edozie having another full year of experience.

I will say that with or without Vaughn we will be much improved after next year, in particular once conference play starts and we have McKay in the line up.

While it is fun to speculate how good we will be once each player is a senior, Vaughn is not the only one who may leave to the NBA early.

Niang: Because of his size and game I would put money on him staying 4 years.
Morris: Ranked higher than Trey Burke and playing better as a freshman, I could see him leaving after 3.
Nadar: Has stated he would like to be a one year guy, Good measurable and longest wing span for a player Fred has ever had, if he has a monster year he could leave after 1.
McKay: Most athletic and could lead us in scoring next year, it hurts that he would only have a semester to play but will be against good opponents.

Hypothetically in ISU makes a final four run with Morris, Vaughn, McKay, Nadar, and Niang we could see Vaughn, and possibly Nadar and/or McKay leave next year. With the spot light being on Morris and Niang in there Junior and Senior years respectively.

I would absolutely love that scenario, because that has mean we are now one of the big time programs and other potentially NBA players may start lining up to play Hoiball.

McKay will be pretty good....
