Mays and Harris to transfer

Since they practice against guys, no reason to have extras hanging around. Florzak and Mosman were the consummate bench players. Mosman graduated in three years, but stuck around for her last year while earning a Masters. Both her and Anna fit in internships before their senior years. Florzak even helped out the cross-country team on e year. They were obviously at ISU for more than BB. BF let them do their thing. Doubt he would have been as cooperative if they were in the regular rotation.

He's said that's exactly the reason.

It is really hard to recruit players of Big 12 level ability to ride the pine...most want to contribute right away.

Even the elite schools suffer transfers for this reason, unless the girls are there more for the degree ala Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, always wanted to play there growing up, etc.

IMO, WBB would be so much better at 13 schollies than 15. It would push 20 more all americans off top tier elite program rosters and onto rosters like ISU, where by increasing parity, and reducing the transfer shuffle.

You're right, practicing against the guys cuts down on the need for extra players. Having less than a full roster works OK as long as the players that get recruited turn out to be Big 12 caliber. That puts a lot more pressure on the decision of who to recruit. Filling out the roster would help the odds a little since we've had some trouble finding players with Big 12-caliber talent.

This is probably the only way to re-align players in wbb. Big 12 caliber players, if recruited by elite schools (in or out of the Big 12), will usually want to test their skills at such schools, even if for the prestige. Some do transfer when it does not work out for them. The same goes for a less heralded player who wants to test their skills in the Big 12. Some have the skills and work ethic to succeed, others don't.

The difference between the elite schools and blue-collar schools, though, may be that it's "easier" for most players to decide to stay at an elite school. Chance to be on a final four team. Peer or family pressure. Comfort of a winning environment. Possibly bigger point spreads leading to more playing time for the bench. Etc. But a blue-collar school in a tough conference is more work with fewer guarantees.

Fennelly's kid is getting $50,000 plus to be "Director of Player Development" Not a bad gig handed to ya!

It's always hard to lose kids that wanted to be here. I wish them the best of luck. I hope they find somewhere where they can thrive. Arlen did, Yackley did, Williams did.

This program needs an infusion of quickness, though. Especially on the perimeter. I think Harris is a good player, and probably can stroke it from three, but couldn't here because she couldn't create separation. She hits everything in warm-ups. We're going to miss having a guard that can drive like Loz next year. I hope these recruits can do that, it's really going to be needed for this team. I watched Green Bay, even in their zone, and I was so envious of their quickness and ability to cover court. It's an attitude and shape thing, too.

Posted in another thread, but Jack was supposed to be coaching the bigs, I thought. In my view, those three girls ( HC, CP, AP) really haven't progressed over their time, sans Pop. I think in the latter case that's just determination. I wonder if that's some of his leaving? We need better recruiting and player development there. I'm sure he's a great person, and that's the hard part of coaching, but there's a need there. Those three all played minutes early in their career. If Mays was the real deal, she would have hit the court, given the kind of year we had.

And how do we know that BF didn't do something with his salary to pay Billy? It wouldn't surprise me if there isn't an agreement that Billy's salary was taken out of Bill's.

Do not think that is possible. Bill's contract would have had to be rewritten for that to happen.

Isn't the AD in favor of keeping as close to the women's scholarship limits as possible? Because that keeps the slots for the mens teams high? I seem to remember BF offering that as one factor in keeping the bench full in the past. Also, I think you compete best if you have a variety of skill sets and athletic types, so you can compete against a running team or a grind-it-out team. I'm sure if he comes across another Harris-type shooter again, he will recuit her again. I'm worried about graduating 3 post players next year. If Amanda could be convinced to make college the best 6 years of her life and take a red shirt, she would go from practically no minutes her senior year to a high probability of starting, or at least significant minutes.
