Matt Campbell's Most Important Game...

All I know is if the first drive is three scripted runs for 5 yards total you’re gonna hear the boos.

The first time there’s a deep slow-developing shotgun handoff on 3rd and a few the boos will get louder.

The first time Campbell tries to draw OSU offside on 4th and short across midfield, then calls time out, and then punts - the crowd just might burn the place down.

Might be a fun game to count how many Cyclone linemen we can see standing in a group dumbfounded watching the ball carrier get tackled right in front of them. Don’t worry, it’s just “execution,” they’ll figure out how to block eventually.

I agree with the general premise. Lose this game and 1-11 looks like a real possibility. That won't get him fired this year, but it will kill recruiting and fan engagement. Then you have set the table for what is most likely a lame duck 2024 season. Hard to see us bouncing back from 4-8 and 1-11 to do much in 2024. At that point you make the coaching change and hope the hole hasn't been dug too deep so maybe the new guy can build it back in 2 or 3 years.

That’s why if we go 1-11 this year we have to let him go. We can’t do the Paul Rhoads thing again.

There's some optimism in the fact that Okie State's defense has not been good in the run game this year. They're giving up 158 yards per game. They just gave up 243 rushing yards to South Alabama who against Tulane only put up 75 yards on 32 attempts.

I'm in a see it to believe it type of situation right now, BUT, I think if there was a time where we have a good rushing attack, it could/should be this game. Optimistically speaking and with how our line was embarrassing against Ohio (who is now #6 in the nation defensively), I wouldn't be surprised to see the big uglies angry and hungry to bounce back. We'll see though.

What’s the point of that? If we go 1-11 this year we will not be going bowling next year. That’s why you have to let him go and get back to the front side of the line graph. It’s just wasting time and digging the hole deeper.
I don't think we're going to go 1-11 but even if he does, there's not a chance he's fired this year. This is/was always going to be some sort of rebuilding year this year. Next year there shouldn't be any excuses as to why we don't make a bowl.

There are multiple games like this each year where after struggling to run block all season we come up against a team that is horrible against the run. We regain hope and expect to run wild and it doesn’t happen.

Last year against Kansas is the perfect example. They were the 7th worst defense against the run - 210 yards allowed per game almost 5 per carry. How much does ISU pick up on the ground? An unbelievable 26 yards at .9 per.

This Saturday will not be any different unless the offense approach completely changes. RBs won’t account for more than 50 yards on the ground.

I 100% agree that we can't simply do what we just did and expect the results to be different just because we're playing a shittier defense, but I do think last year's KU game was a weird one. Jirehl Brock got injured right away. Had 1 carry for 8 yards. Sanders is just not a P5 running back and obviously Silas isn't because he's no longer on the team, and he was the one with the most carries in that game (Norton was out FWIW). We threw the ball 48 times in that game.

I can't speak for anyone else but IMO the OP is right. Apathy is radioactive to D1 football & basketball. If we lose to oSu I'm out for the season. There are plenty of Cyclones to cheer for in the NFL...

If ISU doesn't show any signs of life this season, I'll be apathetic at the beginning of next season...and if there are no signs of life next season who among us WON'T be apathetic the year after that?

That’s why you have to break the cycle early. I’m going to hammer on it until people stop thinking CMC should get two more seasons after this one. It’s on people, it’s on. Get on the train. The faster we get back to square one the faster we have the chance to get back to square 2,3,4,5, etc. we are officially on the stair step down of the coaching lifecycle .

2021: 7 wins
2022: 4 wins (step down)
2023: 4 IF WE ARE LUCKY (flat)
2024: 3 or fewer wins (stepdown)
2025: 3-4 wins (flat)

And so on and so forth until we get a new coach which puts us back at (0,0).

I'll leave it to the coaches to work out, but I'm not sure the problems in the running game should all go on the OL. Are the running backs hitting the holes assigned or are they free-lancing? Our yards-after-contact seems really poor. We're not getting Breece Hall back, but maybe our running backs just aren't that good. I think we also have to give credit to the opposition. Too many think that players with MAC on their jerseys are always inferior to players with BIG XII.

I should add that part of the offense's problem in the Ohio game was due to the Defense being unable to get off the field. Have you looked at the Time of Possession? Their game plan was to play ball control and keep the ball away from our offense. They executed it to near perfection. Our offense didn't get many opportunities. And then we had two missed field goals.

Are you going to cough up the buyout?

I mean, i agree with you, but at the same time the reality is campbell has a contract through 2028 and that buyout is massive. Add that to the fact that Jamie has generally given coaches a long leash and I think its simply accepting reality that he will be here next year, even if the program would be better off making the change if it could be afforded.

Norton actually breaks tackles well, he just can’t break 3 defenders behind the LOS. I do think you’re right though. I think Sama and Hansen both need more time. I also agree that Iowa and Ohio are solid defenses. Doesn’t negate the poor line play though. They’ve gotten their asses kicked so far.
