About the only thing I’ve enjoyed on Ms. Marvel is learning more about everyday Islamic culture. Otherwise the show is flat out terrible. I can’t say I understand why Captain Marvel would need any type of help from Kamala, but since shoe-horning in additional characters is the MCU go to right now I guess they’ll make it work.

I won’t be able to get to Thor until next Friday so I’ll reserve judgement until then, but I’m not really surprised it went too far with Waititi’s weirdness. The guy is in/attached to everything right now, and has probably spread himself too thin. He’s also probably a director that needs to be reined in a bit but no one will be willing to do that at this point given his meteoric rise the past few years.

I think Taika is a guy who is probably a little high on his own supply at this point. I'm 100% in for his vibe, so I'm good with it but when it comes to books, movies, etc. everybody needs an editor. Guardrails are a good thing IMO for creative people.

(Non-Spoiler Thor: Love and Thunder Review) So, I saw Thor: Love and Thunder last night and I'm not sure there is too many movies out there I've had as much mixed feelings on than I have had with this one. The movie was truly the tale of thirds. From the get-go, I found the first 1/3 of the movie to be downright terrible and borderline unwatchable due to its stupidness, goofiness and lack of verisimilitude. The first third of the movie is Taika truly off the hooks with zero guard rails, and the movie suffers for it. In fact, anything with the Guardians in it seemed to completely disregard anything their relationship with Thor had built up through Infiniti War and Endgame, and was some of the worst parts of the movie. I love the Guardians, so I hate even saying that. Also, where was any acknowledgment of Thor's character growth through all the movies prior to this? It was almost like Thor was back at square one again, and a resented this movie for it. Moving on to the middle third of the movie, I found it to be half downright stupid still and half starting to build some substance and heart within it. This all then leads into the last third of the movie, in which I actually found myself fairly enjoying. I'll be the first to admit that I was prone to really dig the last third of the movie, as a lot of the cancer stuff in the movie is hitting really close to home right now. I even found myself crying a bit, which I rarely do in a movie anymore. It wasn't just the cancer stuff that worked, but much of the other stuff started to pay off finally as well. Anyway, I will say the ending worked for me, but I could see how many people may be completely lost and unresponsive by that point.

Ultimately, the saddest part for this movie is how easy it would have been to fix this movie. I think most people will agree that the best parts of this movie are Lady Thor, Gor, and the Thor and Jane relationship. All three of those things were truly great, but the problem is that we just didn't get as much of any of them as we all would have liked. Instead, half the movie was wasted, and I mean wasted, with Taika trying too hard to be Taika, when most that time could have been spent expanding on the meat of this movie. I don't even criticize the short run-time because I see a great 2 hour movie in there. You just need to take out certain unneeded junk and add in more of what makes the movie good. This movie is the perfect example of how directors can get a bit too ambitious when left fully to their own devices sometimes. A bit of studio interference reining in Taika could have made for a better movie.

Anyway, this in no way spoils the mid-credits scene, but I will say for those people who like a certain thing, they will greatly enjoy the mid-credits scene. The end-credits scene was alright, but the mid-credits was better.

The mid credit scene blew my ******* mind. I still don’t know how I feel about what they chose to do there or how the hell it will even work.

Off to see L&T. The whole family is in tow. So we have a hardcore in me, an 18 yo that isn't as much into these any more outside of Spider-man, a 12 yo that still wants to see, and my wife who tolerates most of these at best, but did enjoy Ragnarok and Loki a lot. We'll see how it goes.

Thor was awesome. I get that not everyone will enjoy it because Taika was given an even longer leash on this one than Ragnarok, which is really saying something. But I love his brand of dry Kiwi humor so I greatly enjoyed myself.

Does it feel like it’s self-referential satire of the Marvel universe? Yes, but it’s really no different than what Ragnarok set out to do… it just didn’t have the guardrails in place that directed Ragnarok into Infinity War.

I do think this movie does have one major clue that might be setting something up further down the line:

This movie leaned HARD into sentient weapons, as Mjolnir and the Necrosword were both described and shown to be “calling out” to their future wielders. This is similar to the Ebony Sword shown at the end of Eternals. And I haven’t seen enough of Ms. Marvel to really confirm this but I suspect that the bangles she wears for her powers probably have a similar idea about them, and I suspect that the Ten Rings in Shang-chi also have the same properties.

How many times is Thor going to figure it out by the end of a movie just to start his next movie a lost puppy? His best growth was in Rangrock, infinity war and endgame threw it out the window.

Tony Stark was still one of the best character arcs. He truly evolved.

I enjoyed this much more than Dr. Strange 2. The wife liked it fine. the 18 yo liked it the least. And the 12 yo liked it fine as well.

Overall, I agree that it had a rocky start. Partly because I think I'm over the Guardians. They were a hit in their first movie and have trended down hard for me ever since. As @AirWalke said, sometimes not getting the kiwi sense of humor can make some of Taika's choice feel out of place. I really dig it though, as I have consumed quite a bit of New Zelander entertainment.

Solid, if unspectacular entry into the MCU. Probably in the B-ish range.

This has to be my least favorite Marvel movie yet produced. I'm not sure how you can take all of those Oscar winning actors and decent plot devices and come up with THAT. It seemed like every time the movie needed to have a "serious" moment, it was blown away by humor that didn't need to be there at that moment. While, that style of humor worked for the most part in Ragnarock, it was way over the top in this movie. I'm not sure if I've ever been that disappointed in a movie when walking back to my car.

Also, if you have the ability to turn everyone into Thor...that seems like it would have been an awesome strategy at the end of Endgame to defeat Thanos.

I initially had issues about this but then I remembered Thor said something to the effect of “grant them the power of Thor… but only temporarily” after a slight hesitation as if to say “I’m not sure if this is a great idea but I’m completely out of options at this point, and this dude is going to use Eternity to wipe us all out if I don’t at least try, so screw it”

Whereas in the final battle against Thanos, you had an entire trained army to fight … why share that power when you already have a bunch of supers at your back anyway.

It makes sense in my head.

Just got back from L&T. The best way for me to describe it is it felt like everyone was a caricature of themselves. The Guardians scene felt really forced and could have been removed altogether with nothing lost. The goats were mildly funny once and were quickly annoying every time after that.

The jokes didn't flow at all for me. I'd even say the story stalled for the humor. The constant talking to Mjolnir and Stormbreaker was just weird. Russell Crowe's Zeus felt like some inside joke and left me hoping for a quicker end to his scenes.

I went in with tempered expectations and knowing that Taika was going to be Taika, but this was a tough one for me to sit through. The villain was so dominating at times, it felt like such a disservice to have him completely forget about his strengths during the final fight. I will say that Christian Bale was solid with what he was given. And, despite all of my negatively, it was still better than Dr Strange 2.

Wife and I liked it. Solid B.

These movies need to start connecting to the next Thanos though. Just not sure where all this is going. I kept waiting for Kang or whoever to show up at Eternity

I was thinking the same thing too, especially with the statue above the bifrost etching looking so similar to the TVA statue after Kang took over. Maybe it could still hold some relevance.

There was another statue that fell and busted by the kids that looked like the head of one of those immortal things that was the villain in the Eternals.
