Ms. Marvel Ep 5 thoughts -

  1. The historical stuff was again an interesting peek into something I had little knowledge about.
  2. I hate causality loops.
  3. This show has a massive villain problem. They are uninteresting, their motives are unclear, and frankly they are almost completely unnecessary. There was enough here with just the family drama and the coming of age story that they could have almost completely skipped a traditional villain and still told a compelling arc.
  4. Production constraints are becoming more apparent. While the "bad" CGI doesn't bug me, the 6-episode format is really hamstringing the show. They rush to fill in the world with characters, but never spend enough time with them to really understand their place in it.
So now we are headed to the final episode that has to bring a conclusion to this arc against an antagonist we aren't really sure about and tie into the greater MCU as a whole all under 45 minutes.

The problem with Critics is they don't like movies I like to begin with. If they very clearly don't like the MCU, I'm less interested in their review of the MCU movies. I'm convinced RT needs a genre-specific score. Give me the opinions of the critics that like the MCU/Superhero movies in addition to the overall. Same with horror movies, give me another score that shows what horror fans think of it!

Also, wife approved me to go to Love and Thunder tonight!

The problem with Critics is they don't like movies I like to begin with. Left one very clearly doesn't like the MCU which to me renders his review meaningless. The right one bad mouths even the good Pirates of the Caribbean. I could go without either of these opinions. I'm convinced RT needs a genre-specific score. I think the problem is you don't like critics so why even bother to see reviews? You seem to expect to find a handful of critics that ONLY like MCU movies or ONLY like horror movies because that's what you like. Sorry, but those aren't critics...those are fanboys. You get what I am saying right? What if those two reviews you posted had positive reviews for other MCU movies? Just because they don't like Love and Thunder you're assuming they don't like any MCU movie?

For instance...you posted a review from Mike LaSalle who gave Thor Love and Thunder 1 out of 4 stars. Fine...but remove that from your mind for second.

He also gave Doctor Strange 2 three out of four stars.

He gave latest Spider-Man 3/4 stars.

It's not like he hates the MCU. You can't expect everyone to love all movies in one genre...

Some of you need to get your asses to Thor so we can talk about it.

Ok… honestly. What was that? I am so conflicted initially that I’m not sure what to think yet. The first atleast half hour I was waiting for it to get serious (or atleast more serious) and break into what felt like a real movie. But it never came and was the whole thing was like satire the entire time. This felt like a let down given my high expectations that were likely on me. However, that is a FUN movie. It was so unapologetically stupid at parts that it kind of felt like it worked. But it was stupid. I miss the depth that they had built into Hemsworth character over time. I got to the end it was like they took a short film and made it into a movie. But again, it kind of worked and that was clearly their point. It’s like they had all darkness and mindfuckery they had been building in recent MCU content and said “well, f*ck ALL of that… we’re gonna do something more fun”

Bale’s character: this was weird. I thought he was so good and so dark that juxtaposed the rest of the film. Almost in a way that grounded it so you remembered that there’s an actual somewhat serious story going on. The way marvel makes you feel for bad guys and their positions is kind predictable now but I still like this aspect.

Also, all the cameos… blahahaha!! That was fun.

Finally, the post credit scene?!??? The new bad guy for the next Thor movie is…. Roy F*cking Kent?!?!??? Are you kidding me?!??

Overall, solid B. Man that was so different.

So, I watched last night's episode and wow, that was not what I expected. During the first 2/3 of the episode, I was kind of digging the new historical aspect of things, but was kind of surprised how long and deep it was going into it. During it all, I kept thinking that this is only a 6 episode series, we are already on episode 5, and we keep digging deeper and deeper into an episode completely devoid of either Kamala or all her friends we've fallen in love with through this series. Then comes the last 1/3 of the episode where I kept thinking "wat??". This is seriously where they are going with all of this and how a lot of these new character storylines are wrapping up??? Consequently, I found the last 1/3 to be borderline terrible and extremely rushed. I'm not even mentioning seeing some of the worst CGI I've seen in any MCU project. On top of all of this, I'm now left completely baffled as to how it is even possible to wrap this series up in any satisfactory manner with only 1 episode to go. Maybe they will prove me wrong, but how many times have we found ourselves in this same unsure place on most the recent MCU Disney+ shows going into their final episodes, only to walk away from the series wholly unsatisfied? Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I'd be lying if I said this episode didn't give me a sour taste if my mouth for a series I was fairly digging up until this point.
Spot on. I 100% agree. This series had me pretty excited initially but has really slid into meh. Rushed, confusing at times and not sure I really know who the villain is or if I care

IMO the TV shows have kind of sapped my thirst for the MCU. I still haven't actually finished the Eternals. I just stopped when I got too bored. DS2 I haven't watched. It's right there on D+, I could watch it any time, I'm just not. Haven't gotten tickets for Thor yet, and Ragnarok might be my favorite MCU movie. They gotta be careful here.

I've kind of felt the opposite.

Ive enjoyed the shows (though cap&WS was rather weak, clearly had some rewrites that made it a mess), but have had a harder time getting myself to see the movies lately. Im behind on Eternals, Spider-man, and Dr Strange.

I thought it was gonna end up wayyyyy too slapstick the way it started. By the end it was better. I would give it a C. Not horrible. Not great. Better half was frustrated. He loves the MCU and felt this had a good opp to move things forward and it didn’t at all. He said ‘funny. Good action. Great villain. Predictable like others. Kind of forgettable overall but decent addition’.

Bale is a great actor and I thought was a great villain.

Agreed. It wasn’t bad by any means. But it wasn’t great which is what I was hoping for and thought it could be.

lol I don't expect that at all. An all critic score is interesting too. I just feel a genre specific review would add more color. I value this thread because most people here like the MCU, doesn't mean we all like the same ones. It's interesting to hear what "the fan boys" think.

Love and Thunder was good, but it could have been great. They leaned to hard into the success of Ragnarok and that tone didn't fit with this storyline. Some of the comedy bits were unnecessary and stole time they could have used on story. I wanted more on Jane and Gor.

Thanks! Appreciated! I feel better about it. Not that I was too worried since I already bought the tickets. He didn’t quite make it through DS2 (dead possessed guy wrapped in demon spirits got to him) but he has seen almost all other MCU stuff. Pumped!!
And...what did your son think? I thought the goats were hilarious when it could have been way overdone.

He loved it. The stupidity, pace and definitely the goats. I found myself wanting to slap the **** out of them though.

He absolutely loved the end scene. Thor giving his powers to a bunch of kids? That’s like a dream come true! Even the humor was nailed in that scene IMO. Thor calling Heimdahl’s son King Axel is such a sneaky good line. I LOL at that. I need to watch it again to see what else I missed. They packed a lot of good lines into certain parts of that, especially the first half hour.

One final thought, that movie was so out there that I was legitimately worried they were gonna say this was all some sort of weird, chemo induced hallucination that Jane was having/had. I didn’t think that fit well or they would do that but the fact that I had that thought cross my mind tells you something about the movie.

I can agree with this. It’s basically Ragnarok on crack and/or LSD.

Ragnarok had Goldblum and Ruffalo (not shorting Bale by any means) and a huge link to Infinity War/Endgame.

If this gets somewhere like that I'll give them all the props in the world.

They really have. It all seems like stuff that a better writing/editing process would have worked out.

Back to the Disney + Shows. I've enjoyed them all, but my wife would rank them as follows. She watches Marvel stuff because I like Marvel stuff, but I can tell which ones keep her interest. She also loves the psychological aspects of the characters. I'd have to say my own rankings are probably the same as hers.

1) Wanda-Vision. She LOVED this. It was different, it was unique, kept us guessing. We loved the side characters of Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis, and want to see a spin off show with them exploring the unknown x-files style! She knew just enough about the MCU movies to have a high level knowledge of the characters and came away loving Wanda so much and the story of her grief. She even connected with her motivations in the new Dr. Strange Movie.

A Large Gap
2) Loki- She watched it throughout and liked the Female Loki character a lot of the psychological aspects of Loki. She also really likes Owen Wilson in all things romantic comedy so this was a plus for her.
3) Moon Knight. The dissociate aspects of the main character kept her interest.

A Massive Large Gap to
4) Hawkeye. She watched all of the episodes and followed along, but she was pretty meh about it.

Another Gap
5) Ms Marvel. First couple of episodes she thought were interesting, but the rest is not really keeping her interest

Large Gap
6) Falcon and Winter Soldier. She stopped watching after a couple of episodes. But loved how Captain America handed off the shield to Sam at the end of End Game, but this show really didn't catch her interest.

I know most people are dreading She-Hulk, but I bet we will like it. If nothing else we loved watching Orphan Black and love Tatiana Maslany. Although if the show sort of blows I could see her maybe being disappointed, because Maslany is really good in Orphan Black, hope they don't waste her talents.

Fair. I more so meant the drug induced impact in a negative way. Ragnorak is definitely a better movie.
