I've now got 6 episodes finished with Luke Cage so far and I've gone from absolutely loving it to my interest dropping fairly significantly. It has mostly happened in the past 2 episodes, but I'm still liking it overall. I don't know what it is, but all these Marvel Netflix series tend to always lose me somewhat at some point in the middle with maybe Daredevil Season 1 being the exception. Again, we'll see how this one finishes out, but I still think Netflix would be wise to shave a good 4-5 episodes off all these series going forward. ESPECIALLY with The Defenders series. Ultimately, I'd much rather see a 4-5 episode Defenders mini-series that just goes balls to the wall the entire way through than have to stretch that same excitement and budget over 13 episodes, or even 8 or 9 episodes for that matter. I don't know what it is, but movies always seem to be just a bit too short to accomplish everything, while 23 episode normal network series are WAY too long, and even 13 episode Netflix series seem to be too long as well. I guess, in the end, I'm more concerned with quality over quantity for sure.
Its the ever present issue of budget. It is limited and you tend to spend it early to draw people in and late to finish strong. In between you better tell some good stories or this happens, and is a problem with all TV series. Look at Shannara on MTV. It was never that good but the middle was awful.I've now got 6 episodes finished with Luke Cage so far and I've gone from absolutely loving it to my interest dropping fairly significantly. On episode 8. It starts to pick up again. The world of the Punisher TV show is slowly being fleshed out, with a slew of new casting announcements hitting the web. There are a few familiar names from the comics among them, but Frank Castle fans might notice that there’ have been a few twists in their transition to Netflix.
Ben Barnes, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Amber Rose Revah have joined the show as Billy Russo, Micro, and Dinah Madani. Madani, described as a “highly-trained and sophisticated” Homeland Security officer who crosses paths with Frank appears to be an original character for the show, but Russo and Micro are familiar names to comics fans.
Micro (or Microchip, as he is called in the comics), real name David Lieberman, is the closest thing Frank has to a friend. He’s an informant and hacker who helped Punisher procure weapons and info throughout his career. In the show, he appears to have a similar role, at least in terms of information gathering—he’s described as an Ex-NSA analyst who has secrets of “great value” to Frank.
Meanwhile, Russo is a major nemesis for the Punisher in the comics as the gunman hired to cover up the botched assassination that killed Frank’s family. After failing to kill Frank, Russo gets violently disfigured by the Punisher, his shredded face leading to him taking on villainous persona of “Jigsaw.” In the show, however, he’s got an even more personal connection to the Punisher; he’s described as Frank’s best friend from his time in the Marines, who is now the owner of a PMC called Anvil. While it’s a possibility this version of Russo stays friendly to Frank, it’s more likely he’ll end up being a major villain on the show.
The Punisher is expected hit Netflix sometime in 2018 (or even beyond).
You summarized my thoughts exactly. I think they could easily take out a couple episodes. Really good series, but not sure it's quite to Daredevil level IMO.Sorry for the ongoing commentary for those who don't care, but I've now got 9 episodes done in this Luke Cage series and man, this thing is up and down for me. Just when I think I'm really liking it, bam, it starts to go downhill for a few episodes. Then, just when I think I'm not liking it, bam, something will happen to turn the tables again and so on, and so on. Again, these Netflix series are too many darn episodes!!!! I will say this too. I think one thing that is really hurting this series vs the others is the action scenes. For one, the action scenes are too few and far between, and for two, half the ones you do see occur off-camera, and the other half really aren't that exciting. Granted, part of it has to do with Luke Cages invincible brawling fighting style, but still, I think they could try a little harder to make things cool and impressive. However, a couple things I will give it though as pretty consistently good is both the musical focus of the series as well as its relatability to our current ongoing social commentary this country is dealing with.

Finished it last night. Loved it. I actually enjoy the slower episodes for character development. I would probably rank this slightly ahead of Jessica Jones. I liked both seasons of Daredevil a bit more.
I am not sure if they are going to continue the story with Iron Fist or if they wait until the Defenders but there are a lot of loose ends. Between Luke getting arrested, Mariah and Shades, Diamondback and Dr Burstein, Claire, Misty Knight (I wish she would have actually lost her arm), etc. there is a lot more story to tell.
I just finished Luke Cage yesterday and I thought it was great. I would probably rank it 4th in the Marvel Netflix shows:
1. Jessica Jones
2. Daredevil S1
3. Daredevil S2
4. Luke Cage
I think I liked it a lot more than most fans, but I understand most of the criticism. I think the writers were trying to draw parallels between Luke Cage/Diamondback and Cottonmouth/Mariah and just didn't execute. I also thought that some of the flashback sequences were really weak and inconsistent - the episode with Seagate prison should have completely been a flashback, except for the first and last 5 minutes. There was a lot of unnecessary jumping back to the present for no reason. There were also some interesting flashbacks towards the end of the season that featured some really unique editing/camera tricks, but the significance of those flashbacks almost made Luke Cage look like an idiot rather more than a sympathetic figure.
The soundtrack is unbelievable and each song really compliments the episode well. I'm sure that a S2 will be greelit and that is getting me excited as there is still a lot to explore. I think Alfre Woodward was a great casting choice as Mariah (although the writing at times was a little weak) but I think she could really stand out in S2. According to Netflix they only want to have 2 shows a year, so we may have to wait until 2019 for Luke Cage S2 (2017 - Iron Fist & Defenders, 2018 - JJ S2 and DD S3).
Don't forget The Punisher solo series that just started filming recently and more than likely means it will get shimmied in before The Defenders series.
