So, been working my way through all the Jurassic Park movies lately as I ramp up to seeing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Regardless of the quality of the films, the biggest thing I've taken away is how great all those combined practical and special effects were, not only for their time, but also currently. When looking at a movie like Black Panther, one would think we've come a long way in these effects, but that would truly be a false statement. Black Panther's effects almost look like a cartoon compared to a movie like The Lost World and even Jurassic Park. In the end, this is my biggest criticism of Marvel right now. Shoot, while Star Wars is a bit of a mess across the board currently right now, at least they have figured out the special effects/practical effects formula way better than Marvel has.

Hot off the press:

US gives Disney-Fox deal antitrust approval
  • Walt Disney has won U.S. antitrust approval to buy most of Twenty-First Century Fox assets for $71.3 billion on condition it sell 22 regional sports networks, the Justice Department said on Wednesday.
  • Fox and Disney are preparing to go ahead with their deal, which Fox chose over a competing $65 billion bid from cable operator Comcast earlier this month.

I wonder what will happen with the sports networks. That's an interesting wrinkle.

Are they just required to sell the regional sports networks, or would they have to sell FS1 and FS2 as well? Seems like one company owning the ESPN family as well as the national FS channels could be problematic.

Word is that Jared Leto has been cast as Morbius in the upcoming Sony Spider-Man spin-off movie Marbius the Living Vampire. So far for me, the casting of Jared Leto sounds good, the writers are probably what makes me the most suspect. These are the same writers behind Power Rangers (I kind of liked this), Gods of Egypt (terrible), The Last Witch Hunter (so-so), and Dracula Untold (so-so). Its kind of hard for me with all these Sony Spidey spin-off films because I either want them to be in the MCU or not happen at all. With that said, for them to even have a remote chance of eventually being adopted into the MCU, they HAVE to be good. Therefore, I really want to see very good writers, directors, and actors, or I just don't really want to see the movies at all. As of right now, only time will tell if ANY of these Sony films have anything to do with the MCU. Right now, I'm leaning towards no, but that doesn't mean I don't really want them to.

Ant-Man & The Wasp RT score was just revealed: currently sitting at 89%

For reference, Infinity War has an 82% score, and the first Ant-Man film also has an 82% score.

I can’t link to RT on mobile right now, probably because the DCEU fans are trying to rip it apart (kidding...maybe?). So here is an IGN article detailing the RT score.

Edit: Here is an editorial from RT with initial reactions from critics

Edit 2: Here is a link to the RT score and it is now up to 90%

Kevin Feige has now confirmed that Doctor Strange is still for sure happening, just more a matter of when as they may have larger gaps between sequels moving forward.

Personally, while I found the first Doctor Strange to be probably my #1 most overrated MCU film, even though I did still really enjoy it, I'm finding myself somewhat weirdly really looking forward to seeing a second one. For one, I really like how they set up Baron Mordo as a future villain. And then also, I really enjoyed Doctor Strange in Infinity War. In fact, he not only was one of my favorite characters in Infinity War, but I liked him more in Infinity War than I did in his solo film.

Another new image from Infinity War of Captain America. I love it. In general, I feel like what Captain America's costume has evolved to has been pretty much perfection. Since they've gotten here, they've switch more to minor enhancements rather than big alterations, which is perfect. With this latest one, I love how they are finally somehow incorporating the comic-book scales into his costume, but not necessarily changing everything up.

Just finished Luke Cage season 2 and it was leagues better than the first season imo. It still had some flaws but also had some cool things you don't see in any other show in the genre. I wont spoil anything but I am interested in seeing where they go from here. I'll go ahead and put my Marvel netflix series rankings below.
1. Punisher
2. Daredevil S2
3. Jessica Jones S1
4. Daredevil S1
5. Luke Cage S2
6. Jessica Jones S2
7. Luke Cage S1
8. Defenders
9. Iron Fist

Yeah, your list doesn't look that dissimilar to mine. Good to hear you liked Luke Cage: Season 2. Makes me more amped to watch it.

Some alternative concept art for Captain America: The Winter Soldier back in the day. It is essentially a revamp of his Avengers suit. Not gonna lie, this is pretty sweet to the point where I wouldn't mind if they whipped this out again sometime. I do love his current iteration pretty much just as good though.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is rocking a 83% Rotten Tomatoes score right now with a 6.8/10 average rating. For comparison, the first Ant-Man finished out with an 82% score and also a 6.8/10 average rating. Therefore, things seem to be tracking right alongside its predecessor. While those aren't amazing scores when compared to a lot of the other MCU movies, they are solid ones. It also does seem like more people than not seem to be liking the second one even more than the first one. Regardless, I can't wait. I've even roped my wife into going with me as she tends to somewhat like the more lighter, funnier Marvel movies. The last superhero movie I took her to was Spider-Man: Homecoming, which she actually kind of liked. Prior to that was Batman vs Superman, which was kind of a disaster. Thought I'd never get her into another Superhero movie ever after that one. In the end, I've learned to choose my battles/movies wisely if I want to keep her even remotely involved.

Anyone else planning on going opening night like I am???

Non-Spoilery Review

So, I saw Ant-Man and the Wasp last night and had a great time. My wife did too. Overall, if I could describe it, I'd call it a fun, fairly self-contained romp around the Marvel universe. If possible, I'd even say they upped the laughs from the first one, even though I thought they tried a little too hard at a few times to the point where some stuff didn't land. To preface, one also needs to know that I am a shill for the first one where pretty much all the laughs landed for me in that one. So, did I like it more than the first one? After only one watching, I'd say no. While the movie was a fun enjoyable movie that only added good things to the MCU, throughout, I found myself constantly looking for some further depth and emotion that just wasn't there. This caused things to lag for me about 2/3 of the way through. It probably didn't help that I really just didn't get into any of the villains at all. All of them pretty much seemed to be there as a plot device because "obviously" the heroes need some hurdle to jump over. I don't want to get too down on things though as there were some very good highlights from the film. In particular, Louis was stellar as usual. I absolutely love Evangeline Lily as The Wasp. They couldn't have cast her better. And lastly, if I was honest, maybe my favorite part of the movie was every scene Randall Park as FBI agent Jimmy Woo was in. Lets just say that what Louis brought to the first movie was what Randall Park brought to this movie. I so much want to see more of that guy everywhere. I couldn't stop laughing at him. So, in the end, I'd definitely recommend the movie to anyone who just wants a fun Marvel movie to see this summer. To me, it did exactly what it was supposed to do, which was give me a lighthearted palette cleanser after all the gloom that came with Infinity War. I also truly believe this is Marvel's intention all along with both these Ant-Man movies. Sometimes it is nice to just pull back the stakes and have some fun just living in the MCU rather than have everything be an earth-ending crisis all the time. Look for me to follow this up with my updated rankings soon.
