I finished Jessica Jones: Season 2 last night, so I figured I'd post my full-out non-spoiler review for anyone interested. Overall, the series was decent, but not great by any extent, and it definitely wasn't as good as the first season. In general, I did enjoy the story for the most part, and I do think that story was paced fairly well throughout the series. There was also some good character and drama moments in there, which do hit pretty well and keep you coming back for more. Jessica Jone's character herself is probably the most interesting character this season.
However, there is no doubt that decent story arc is a VERY slow burn, probably as slow as any of the decent to good Netflix series (I'm excluding you Iron Fist) so far. One quickly realizes that the scale of this show is relatively small and there really is VERY LITTLE action throughout the entire season, which only makes the slow burn feel that much slower. Sometimes you almost feel like they are trying really hard not to be a comic book TV show, well, either that or they are just getting way way to skimpy on the budget. Truthfully, this season probably has the least amount of action of any Marvel Netflix series yet. Another big knock I had on this series was the inconsistencies from episode to episode on character arcs and motivations, which is not a good thing and makes it very apparent how each episode is directed by someone different. In particular, Patsy was by far the worst in this sense. Her character was all over the place throughout the series. It seemed like one episode she thinks and wants this, whereas the next episode she thinks and wants this. While her character arc clearly had an end goal in mind, getting there was just so messy that it left me very unsatisfied in the end. She wasn't the only one either as both Jessica Jones and Malcolm had some of the same issues.
With all that said, I still did overall enjoy the series, but it is definitely more of a middle-tier Netflix series like Luke Cage: Season 1 than an upper-tier series like either Daredevil series or even Jessica Jones' first season. Hey, at least it isn't down in the dumpster with Iron Fist and The Defenders. Comparing directly to Luke Cage, Luke Cage's first half of Season 1 was better than this season of Jessica Jones, but the second half of Luke Cage was worse. Jessica Jones was just more consistent. And one last thing, Season 1 of Jessica Jones was no doubt carried by an outstanding villain in Kilgrave and this season just doesn't have that. The villain in this one was more the mediocre type. Therefore, probably if you took away Kilgrave in the first season and plugged in another mediocre villain, the two seasons would be pretty comparable. Therefore, this just shows how much a good villain can make a series.
Lastly, look for me to update both my MCU and my Superhero TV show rankings soon to include this season of Jessica Jones.
