Marsden - Worthless?

I'm just going to say one thing "he's a sophmore". And he might as well be a freshmen now that he has to learn a whole new system (not that there really was a formal "system" last year.)

Marsden at least has work-ethic which impresses me more then whatever talent Hubalek supposedly has that brought him to scholarship status at ISU. I can handle mental mistakes the team is making because they have just started playing together, their learning a new system, some of them are freshman, etc, etc. Hubalek just plain seems to be ignoring simple fundamental #5 position basketball. He appears to be favoring the #2 position more and that is not even close to being his strength. Maybe Alex Thompson will toughen him up on the practice squad this season like it sounds like he did to Brunner at EIU. I've heard guys from EIU who are friends with Brunner claim he hated going against Thompson in practice all the time cause he was so physical so hopefully the same will happen with Hubalek.

I never called him worthless - I asked if he was worthless. My post claims he shouldn't be starting, but instead coming off the bench for 4-8 minutes a game.

Didn't Jiri have 7 boards and 2 blocks against UNI? I dont think I have ever seen Ross with those numbers. I am not against Ross at all, I just think Jiri is a better option (if he stops taking 18 freakin shots per game).

Ross may not put many numbers in the box score but he's a good role player and doesn't make many mistakes. On offense I think he's a notch above Jiri as far as setting screens. Have you ever seen Jiri set a pick? It's pathetic, his picks rarely ever work because he rolls out before the guy with the ball can run his defender into him.

Don't backpeddle man. Being you asked the question, insinuated that you felt he was worthless. If you're going to post something controversial like this - expect to take the heat.

I think it's rather silly to call him worthless or even ask the question. Marsden has been a huge disappointment for many so far this season yet that hardly makes him worthless.

Marsden has played in 6 games where he had a coach that knew something about coaching front court players. He should be playing in his seventh game as a redshirt Freshman against Drake. Everything has been said several times---give the kid a break.

Anyone else see Marsden as a terrible starter? He can't rebound, pass, block shots, block shots, defend his man, or play help defense. No post moves, although he can hit short open jumpers. He's beyond slow and entirely unaggressive. I wouldn't mind giving him 6-10 minutes off the bench to shoot the occasional open jumper and use some of his fouls, but start??? Come on. Hopefully Mac will wise up and start Hubalek if he can get his head on straight (AKA pass often and develop better shot selection), and give Gray a lot of minutes off the bench, or vise versa. I'm hoping Marsden is done starting now that Hubalek is off suspension, although the announcers last night sure didn't sound like it.

Thoughts?
What Division I program are coaching at? Somewhere I must have missed that. Everyone knows our team is young in experience and GMAC has a proven track record. Give it time, you will be thrilled by next year with this program. Have Great Cy Day!

The way Hubalek played against UNI, I would certainly rather have Marsden in the game.

And in truth, I'd rather see Cory Johnson playing more than both of them. He doesn't have the height and his defense needs work, but at least he's aggressive and plays like a post.

Holy cow dude, I am hoping you have got Hubalek and Marsden mixed up because there is no way I am starting Hubalek over Marsden. We need a post player, not a wannabbee guard-shooting forward in a centers body. I would take Marsden playing with one arm behind his back over the Hubalek that played last night, and for that matter, EVERY Capital City League game he played in this Summer. Marsden is smaller and maybe not quite as big as Hubalek, but he works hard and at least gives us a presence down low. If we had a presence down low last night, we wouldn't have been outscored 30-14 in the paint and could very well have won the game. What we need is Alex Thompson and/or Brackens and we will have both next year and then Jiri can sit on the bench......IMO

"I love how everyone dumps on Jiri for having a bad night. He will have plenty of good games down the road for us the next couple years. As for Marsden, he's a reliable player. He won't take many chances, won't screw up much, plays defense. I think he's improved quite a bit from last season, especially with his body and footwork"

Dumping for having a bad night????? I haven't seen him play the position we need him to play since he's been here. Floating around the perimeter and shooting outside shots last night that I am sure, he was wasn't making 10% of the time is not what we need. Does he even know what posting up is?? Maybe I am sounding harsh, but he played last night exactly like he did in the summer league and I was hoping since the coach isn't there that he was just having some fun and was hoping once Gmac got a hold of him, he would play his position. Last night was a big negative on that one. Gmac didn't look too happy so I hope he improves because we need him DOWN LOW...

I'm sorry, but Marsden does not change the 30-14 scoring margin in the post. Our post defense was better than any of us expected. We stayed in front of our guys and Marsden would have done the same. In fact, Coleman or Stout probably could have used their quickness against him that was negated when Clark, Gray and Hubalek were guarding them. And Marsden was certainly not going provide more than 2-4 points in the paint on offense. Also, Marsden does a decent job boxing out, but he doesn't attack the rebound, he lets it come to him. He would not have helped on the boards.

How many practices do you see? Do you know for a fact that Hubalek is not doing what the #5 in Mac's offense should be doing. How do you know about his work ethic? One stinkin' game that Hubalek shoots a ton and misses a lot and he has a bad work ethic? Hopefully Hubalek will pass a little more, but McDermott's offenses have always had big guys that can shoot. When Marsden is in there, he's also on the outside a lot setting screens and passing. Once Hubalek figures out he can pass the ball and will get it back (unlike last year when he passed the ball there was no chance he'd get it back), he'll be much improved. Plus, Hubalek will actually go after a rebound. It seems like Marsden does a good job boxing out, but he just needs to figure out how to attack the rebound after boxing out. If the ball doesn't come right at him, there is no chance he'll get the board. Marsden will be valuable in spurts this season (10-15 minutes a game) and will develop into a better player I'm sure, but Hubalek provides much more help. We didn't pass to the post at all last season. We have more post feeds already this year than we had all last year. I think once Jiri realizes he will get the ball down low if he posts up, he will do that more.

Anybody who thinks Jiri will ever be anything but a poor shooting 2 guard will be sorely disappointed.

He showed some good post moves last year, he just could never get the ball. Blalock and Stinson got frustrated with the post players and stopped giving them the ball. Once Hubalek realizes this team passes the ball, he'll be better.

i dont mind marsden in the game. he makes good decisions and i will take that over taggarts dumb *** all day long. i get chills just thinking how bad he was. jiri will bounce back. he's rusty and wanted to prove himself. Gmac has faith in him so I will trust him. i just wish he would get on the block because he does really have some nice post moves. i think he is scared of bigger guys and thinks he has the advantage off the block.

There's no backpeddling - read the original post again. I claim that Marsden is severely lacking in many areas, with a few brighter spots. Hubalek has more potential if he can select better shots and get in a better rhythym (or whole team needs to develop rhythym, actually).

I like Marsden coming off the bench for short periods of time (after Gray/Hubalek, whichever one does not start). My question was to get other people's opinions and clarify if other people thought Marsden will continue starting (per the announcers during the UNI game).

ISUFan22 - Relax.

Agreed here.

I think you should go one on one with Marsden, maybe you could teach him a few things, you seem to have all the answers.

Let me clarify. The "Worthless?" in the title is to get some action in the post, make people think a little bit.

I like Marsden off the bench. Selfless, seems to put in good effort, team kind of guy. I like that he's a hometown guy. I like that he shot 53.2 percent from the field last year. Not many shots to take after Taylor and Hubalek use them all up...

However, I think his role is off the bench for short periods of time.

Maybe the plan is for him not to start anymore and this whole argument is moot.

Marsden is a great guy and a hard worker. Just be patient with him and give him time. He won't be a star, but he'll definitely contribute. I can promise you that. Lets just all get off his back and be positive fans.
