Marcus Simmons - Duhawk Open

Huge blow if he's done at 125. Takes us down to 3 NCAA qualifiers unless someone can pull off a good conference tournament

He didn't wrestle against UNI either, and is in tournament at 141. I assume the cut (to 125) is too deep.

He weighed in at 140.6. I can't see him back at 125. Does that mess up his weight certification?

Is he no longer able to wrestle 125 due to the 1.5% rule? I'm not as familiar with the intricacies of NCAA weight rules, so just curious.

I do not know if there is enough time for a decent plan by Big 12 or not. If that was the plan, I would of thought he would weigh in the low to mid 130's

Have to be to your weight class by Feb 15th. Even if he had weighed in at 133 today, I think 125 would have been out.

This will be an issue next year too. Ian Parker and Karen Storr are 133/141. Someone will be sitting.

I think this even messes up his ability to go 133 by February 15th. Hall breaks his leg next week, Simmons wouldn't be able to fill in.

Yes, his descent plan starts over from 140.6 and he could only lose 1.5% of his body weight per week.

Todays date is January 28th and big 12s start March 4th.

Feb 4th: 140.6 - (140.6 *.015)= 138.49 lbs
Feb 11th: 138.49 - (138.49*.015)= 136.41
Feb 18th: 136.41 - (136.41*.015)= 134.37
Feb 25th: 134.37 - (134.37*.015)= 132.35
March 4th: 132.35 - (132.35*.015)= 130.36

So he is done @ 125 for the year.

By my reading of the rules, you have to be down to your lowest weight by Feb 15th, not Big 12s.

8.3.3 Weight Class Ascent/Descent Option. A wrestler wishing to weigh in at a weight class higher than his or her lowest certified weight class may return to the certified weight class by following the mandatory requirements listed in Rule 8.3.4. This provision may be applied multiple times during the season up to February 15. A wrestler returning to his or her lowest allowable weight class shall follow the prescribed weight-loss plan. The weight-loss plan shall indicate that the wrestler’s original weight class can be reached not later than February 15. There is no appeal for missing the February 15 deadline.

What if they want to wrestle him at 141 and Gabe at 149 ?

Judging by today's results it appears to not matter. 4th at Loras?

BTW, I'm a little surprised that people are shocked he can't make weight at 125. That was pretty clear before today, wasn't it?

I agree with both of your points.

I haven't read a single post wear someone said they were "shocked". I do think it's a huge loss for the team because I felt that MS was a qualifier who could score points and have a outside shot at the podium.

Also the results at this tournament by our other young guys are a bit underwhelming IMO
