Mangino

I would say that about 90% of NFL players make it there on pure talent. Kaepernick is an athletic freak and was widely regarded as the most TALENTED QB in the draft. Put him up against crappy competition and that just isn't fair. How many guys like that do you see turn broken plays into highlight real plays, it happens all the time.

Mangino exceled with Huepel, White, and Reesing. Not sure you will find many scouts saying those guys were uber talented.

Widely thought of? By who?

He was seen as a prospect with some physical tools and decent arm strength, but there were lots of questions about his accuracy and ability to play in an offense that wasn't the Pistol. He wasn't widely regarded as the most talented qb in the draft. That's simply not true.

Wayne Bolt wasn't heavy set was he? I thought it was McFarland that was the heavier set coordinator of the two.

Bolt was so heavy before he was hired at ISU that he had to step down from coaching for health reasons. He ended up having stomach reduction surgery and lost some weight before Chizek rescued him from the scrap heap.

All of y'all making fat jokes, he can lose the weight, but he'll always be ugly. So there!

I thought Wayne Bolt did a decent job. The defense under Chizek was a different matter.

Unfortunately Bolt was the defensive coordinator and while a ton of fun, was pretty bad. McFarland, the offensive coordinator was very good though, probably the best offense wehave had since Loney. I kinda wish he would have been retained.

My bad. I have blocked out most of those years.

I thought Arnaud looked great in that Offense and agree we should have kept it.

I'm really curious why everyone finds it necessary to personally attack coaches, players, etc.? I'm sure if you lined up the crew that posts on here regularly, especially those who talk the most trash, you would have pimple faced, scrawny, fat, short, ugly and any other potentially "negatively perceived" attribute a person could have. At the end of the day, this dude can coach. Many of you just sit behind your computer and basically act like Bullies tearing anyone and everyone apart trying to get a laugh.

Coaches have to have thick skin as it is because so many people criticize them for their on and off field actions. If you were put under the same scrutiny on every move you made both personal and professional, you probably wouldn't like it. Add to it a bunch of people commenting on an attribute you may very well be self conscious about, it's just not necessary.

Why does public ridicule have to be part of every damn post?

Also, I think McFarland hung around after Chizik skedaddled to ease the transition to the next staff. And he did this pretty much assured there would be no job waiting for him here. Pretty classy move IMHO.

Yep, I would have been all for keeping him here, but JP had Herman all lined up.

IRRC, it was the TE's coach (Fountain?) that stuck around through signing day, and then bolted to join the empire on the plains. McFarland was paid the remainder of his contract, which was 6mo or a year, I forget. He was volunteer coaching at Gilbert or one of the other high schools north of Ames last I knew.
