Mangino to Pitt?

If he gone I think we have to go down the Sage route. Strong ties to the University, great mind, young and charismatic, etc.

Some continuity on offense would be nice and I think he could provide that for us.

What coaching experience does he have? I haven't really followed him after his NFL career, but a quick google search didn't turn him up coaching anywhere that I could find. I feel it would be insane to make someone and OC of any college, let alone a power 5 conference with no coaching experience at all.

If I've missed something about his rising coaching career, then I apologize.

Where did Kliff Kingsbury Coach before Texas Tech and Houston? If Sage could bring half of the offense Kliff has brought to both of those schools we'd be in luck.

How's that working out for them?

Let's see.....

They beat us with their 3rd string quarterback.

They had twice as many wins as us this year.

They had 8 wins last year.

They had 8 wins the previous year.

Would you be happy if we had an 8 win year? Or better yet were you even born the last time we had 8 wins?

One of those 8 win years was before Kingsbury even got there.

TTech is on a severe downward spiral. This is only like the second time they've missed a bowl game in the last 20 years.

CFH didn't have any coaching experience and we hired him as a head coach. I think that turned out alright.

Who else are we going to get? Who seriously wants to be an OC here?

If you think TT is in a "Severe Downward Spiral"

What do you call what's happened to our football program the last few years?

you should know as well as anyone that basketball isn't the same as football. I can't think of anyone who went from no coaching experience to an OC/DC at a major college program.

Hoiberg spent a year on the Timberwolves coaching staff and four years in their front office, learning how to scout talent, scout opponents, manage rosters, etc. Why is this so hard for people to understand? Sage has not had ANY of this experience. NONE. That is the difference.

Yeah... It's not like he's one of the more successful OC's. It's not like he's one of the few guys who has proven he can win at crappy schools. Nope, just that one bowl win is all.

Mangino thrived beating ****** teams. The only school he has a winning record against is Iowa State. He has a measly four wins against the B12 south, to his 20 losses.

The year he went to the Orange Bowl he played one team that had a winning record, and lost.

I'm not quick to praise Mangino like everyone else for beating up a pretty pathetic B12 North.

I've actually been alive for 5 - 8 win seasons by the Cyclones. How about you?

To answer your other question, yeah, i would be happy with 8 wins. Kingsbury's path seems to be very similar to that of Rhoads, only slipping faster than Rhoads did.

He didn't coach them to the 8 wins in 2012, he came in after Tubberville left.

He's had one good season and one dumper so far.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say the jury is still out, since he's only been there officially for 2 seasons. But, I also wouldn't use him as the standard to judge all coaches by, not to mention, the guy has had a lot more experience as a coach than what I can find for Sage. It's not just about knowing how to design an offense, it's also knowing how to recruit and getting paths to those recruiting grounds. You don't learn that playing in the NFL.

Anyways, as I said earlier, if Sage has coaching experience, then I am wrong. If he has none, as that is all I can find, then I still think it's really dumb to assume he's just going to slide into an OC position in a power 5 conference and have a chance to succeed. I mean we've had guys here, who are considered to be towards the top of their field in Mangino and Herman, they had and are having trouble here, why would you assume a guy with no experience at all is right for this job?

Um, you didn't mention he beat a pretty good Virginia Tech team in the Orange Bowl...pretty sure they had a "winning record."

This is what is baffling me about this conversation. Since he left football, he hasn't been involved with it at all. At least as I can find. You don't just wake up one morning and decide you want to be an OC of a power 5 team, no matter how ****** that team is.

As far as answering another question from above,

Who else are we going to get? Who seriously wants to be an OC here?

I think you'd be surprised at how many guys would jump at the chance to come to ISU. Probably no one in a power 5 conference, but hell, there'd be plenty of FCS OC's who'd come here in a second.
