Mamba Day

I don't especially like Kobe. But even I have to admit that was a pretty amazing way to go out. And hell, the lakers won.

Never been a Kobe fan but he deserves all the love he's getting around the league, a once in a generation talent, people forget that in between Jordan and Lebron, Kobe and the Lakers carried the NBA. Lebron owes all of his hype to Kobe's legal issues. If he never hooks up (he was aquited) with the hotel floozie, Kobe would have gone beyond Jordan in terms of his brand.

he wasn't aquitted. Charges were dropped after victim shaming that makes bubu's case seem like nothing. Read what the alleged victim said happened.

That's a real hot take. Especially considering LeBron was already getting a ton of hype as a high school junior two years before Kobe's incident happened.

But hell of a way for Kobe to go out last night.

Even if Kobe never had any legal issues, he still wouldn't have been as beloved as Jordan during his playing days. It's just a difference in era and the persona of each player. Kobe wasn't terribly popular BEFORE his legal issues. He's just never been a very likable person. MJ was beloved as a player. He redefined branding. Nothing compares to the Air Jordan brand, even today 32 years after the first Jordan shoe was produced and 13 years after Jordans playing career ended.

Jordan played in an era where we didn't find out every little shady thing he did. His personal reputation has been tarnished since his retirement, but history remembers him fondly as a player.

Kobe has been much more exposed during most of his career, even before his legal issues.

Kobe is an all time great player, but he was never going to eclipse Jordan.

Let's say Tim Duncan hangs it up after this season. Who had a better career - him or Kobe?

Duncan, the fact that he never had anything close to a losing season and that he was so durable and consistent put him ahead for me.

Kobe. Duncan was never a real flashy player. They are both HOFers

Something to be said for substance over style, though. Kobe may have more gaudy individual numbers, but Duncan has been the cornerstone of the most stable franchise in the league for the better part of two decades. And he's been almost as good a closer in big games as Kobe was. Just because his style was more understated shouldn't make it any less impressive.

Can anyone just enjoy kobe w/out having to bring up Colorado? Thats like bringing up the bowling alley when talking about Iverson as a bball player or Jordans gambling and in general crappy person traits. None of it matters when looking at them as a bball player.

Yeah. We should all just enjoy Hitler as a great orator too--never mind that whole WWII thing.

your reasoning for kobe being better than duncan is because duncan isnt flashy. WTF kind of reasoning is that? You can argue it either way but for ****s sake that is just stupid.

I think Duncan is the best PF to play the game. I think he was the best player in the league for a few years. Hard to argue either, either way. Toss up.

Absolutely. You could argue that Kobe had higher peaks during his career - the three-peat with Shaq - but Duncan had a steadier run, never missing the playoffs and only failing to get out of the first round four times. There's no wrong answer. Both great players and drastically different styles and personalities.
