Maine Vacation?

This is what we were suppose to do. That sounds like the meal my wife was talking about. Is that about a half hour from Bar Harbor?

Yes at Southwest Harbor. Southwest Harbor also has Beals Lobster Pier which had the best lobster roll we had all week out there.

Get up to Baxter State Park. Mt Kahtadin is breath taking. We hiked it 20 years ago, and the elevation gain is more than a lot of Colorado 14ers.

How did you find the footing? I hear stories of people describing parts of it as terrifying like hiking on a knife edge but I wonder if that’s misleading it’s only “scary” compared to hikes in northeast. It’s one of the only hikes on my wish list that isn’t in western us/Canada.

So my wife and I absolutely love to travel to Maine. Here are a few of our favorites:

Visit Portland. Restaurants and breweries are amazing. The brown butter lobster roll at Eventide Oyster Co is ridiculous.

Bar Harbor is a cool tourist town. Plenty to do there. We wanted to do the puffin watching the last time we were there but it was canceled due to fog.

Hike Jordan Pond! It’s absolutely beautiful and a really easy hike for most anyone.

If you are into a bigger hike Cadillac Mountain is excellent.

Go check out a lighthouse or two. We really like Pemaquid Point

I don't remember it being that bad. There were some tricky spots, but I've also done Class 4 routes in Colorado, so I have that basis for comparison.

Love Maine! Lot of great recommendations already in this thread. Just to add my two cents:

Visit the wild places. Lots of moose and bears to be seen if you spend some time in the state or national parks. Baxter State Park as suggested is amazing. I saw moose and a black bear when visiting it. If you like golf, Samoset Resort on the coast is amazing and calls itself something like "the pebble beach of the Atlantic." Otherwise, Belgrade Lakes was a fun course with lots of elevation change. Dining on lobster rolls or other local fare seems to be a great bet. When I was there my favorite was the "The Porthole" in Portland. I think it's been in existence forever if memory serves correctly.

I taught golf for a summer in Maine and enjoyed my experience tremendously. Thus, my experience was only in the summer, and not the other seasons, but I'd recommend those places above, and those were my best memories.

Edit: if you want to be a real "Mainiac" try Moxie soda. Come back and let me know what you think;-) Bleh! LOL.

Only been to Portland, but I loved it!
Two Words: Twin lobsters! Two More Words: Blueberry beer!
That should cover it.

I’ll say it’s the best kept secret for most Americans. Besides people in NE, Maine is a complete afterthought (hope it stays that away).

Acadia is a pretty cool national park. Bar Harbor is an awesome little town but it’s really gets overwhelmed during summer and early fall. Plenty of mountain hikes and regular trails around the park. Cadillac mountain is the most popular. First sunrise in the US can be seen there. I’m not sure I’d spend more than 2 days there though.

For fall colors- I’d target first week of October.

It’s a bit away, but north of Bangor is beautiful open county. Great day road trip.

And I didn’t know Maine was this popular with Iowans.

Also for flights, there’s direct flights from Minneapolis to Portland

Northwest section of Maine is truly some of the best camping in the country. Driving down logging roads is just so much fun. My last trip, we had about a 10 acre pond all to yourselves. Only saw three people in three days.

It has been 15-20 years, but our trip there was quite enjoyable. We flew into Bangor and took in a handful of lighthouses, Bar Harbor and Acadia NP, Baxter State park and the Appalachian Trail, then into New Brunswick as far as Moncton and back again along the coast. I recall staying in a B&B near Southwest Harbor that was really cool. I see it has since closed. All in all the whole trip was very nice.

That's what I've always suspected, that it's not any different than a lot of epic trails in Rockies and Sierras...just kind of out of place in the northeast in terms of the challenge/terrain. Any of them can be dangerous for certain people but not at all for experienced hikers.

The Porthole is a great place to grab brunch. Lobster Bennie is awesome

A Bar Harbor restaurant I recommend is Havana.
