Maine Vacation?

I live 10 minutes from York Harbor, Maine. That's a great place to start and it's near the Nubble Light House, one of the most photographed light houses in the world. My favorite place to eat is York Harbor Inn. A classic old Maine house that's been turned into an inn and restaurant.

Everything else has been mentioned. Bar Harbor is great, but it's a long drive from the southern tip of Maine. In addition to fishing, book yourself for a guided ocean kayak tour. You won't regret that.

Portland is worth a stay. Great NE town on the coast.

A suggestion is to take the Downeaster...it's the Amtrak train that runs up and down the entire East Coast. Pick it up in Boston and take it to Maine. Rent a car once in Maine.

The fall colors are great, but Maine in the summer is the best.

Is lobster fishing an activity you can participate in? Don't they just set traps for them? Clearly I'm not a lobster expert.
I honestly don’t know. You’re probably right. I just have this picture of active fishing communities, and if my picture is accurate, I’d love to see that.

We did the Maine trip in late August 2022 which was good timing to get out of the TX blast furnace and kids were returning to school in the NE which reduced the crowds, Flew into Boston, drove up to Portland for lunch, stayed a couple of days at quaint Boothday Harbor and did the Cabbage Island Clambake, then stayed at "swank" Bar Harbor for a couple of days (where we hiked Acadia), then drove back to Boston and caught a game at Fenway. The lobster, lobster rolls and clam chowder was fantastic. One of the best vacations our family has done.

We just got back from Maine. Were there in mid September. We stayed at Bar Harbor most of the time. Did a lot of hiking. Went to quite a few lighthouses. Bar Harbor is a cool town. Lots of bars, restaurants and shops. We did a whale watching trip, loved it. We missed our lobster fishing trip, because that is when the hurricane made landfall there.

Hey All.

Has anyone ever been to Maine. The wife and I have been talking about possibly getting up there next fall. Neither of us have ever been, but for some reason, the idea seems appealing to both of us (recent cave events aside). Acadia National Park, Lobster fishing, I would imagine fall foliage would be incredible up there, etc. I did find myself in a small town in Rhode Island during a work function many, many years ago, and felt the area was very unique.

Has anyone ever been, and if so, have any suggestions? I’ve started doing a little research, and getting out there doesn’t seem to be terribly expensive. Just not sure what towns would be good ones for a “home base”. I’d actually prefer a small to medium sized fishing village, or something, then have a rental car to get to points of interest.

My wife and I went the last weekend of September and it was awesome.

We went to Acadia and hiked a lot, lots of cool trails. Bar Harbor is the main town but there are lots of other little nice towns. We did a boat ride tour from bar Harbor and that was cool. Ate lots of Lobster!!!

We flew into Bangor and rented a car.

Feel free to ask specific questions.

There is a small lobster boat in Bar Harbor that will take about 6 people out and catch the lobster and then prepare a meal for you on the boat. That is the trip that we had reserved, but missed. We were looking forward to that. I can ask my wife the name if you are interested.

We flew into Portland and rented a car. Easy to get out of Portland.

The boat ride we took you can see the thousands of lobster trap buoys. Pretty much they set them and go check them every few days.

We ate at a place called Thurston's Lobster Pound. Essentially they are a lobster fishing company and all the losbters they serve are fresh from their catches. They are located in a marina and you can see the boats come in and out.

There's a mountain were you can go and see the first sunrise in the US. We tried to do it but it got really foggy so we couldn't see the sun rise. But there is really good hiking at this mountain.

The lighthouses we saw were really cool.

1 we had to walk almost a mile out into the water on a break. It was foggy so you couldn't see the end which made it cool.

Another one we went to is supposed to be haunted because a ship crashed into the point before it was build.

The rocky cliffs with the waves crashing was one on my favorite parts. I just love the shoreline.

There is also the lighthouse that in the Forest Gump movie. (Marshall Point Lighthouse???)

Is the one a mile out made of huge flat rocks with gaps in between? (Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse)

If you go to West Quoddy Lighthouse, I think that is landmarked the Eastern most point of the United States

Yeah the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse was the one you had to walk out to

Owls Head is the one that is haunted

Bass Harbor Light is cool because you can go down on the rocks and look up at it from the water

My wife and I went to Maine is August and did this fishing trip. Captain Jason took us out and pulled 5 lobster traps. Cooked the lobster on the boat with sweet corn and Maine blueberries. It was really fun and the captain was a good dude.

Allagash Brewery in Portland was really nice too. We did a cellars tour and had some cool lambic beers. Portland has great food.

Would of liked to see Owls Head. Where is that at?

The L.L. Bean Flagship store in Freeport is pretty cool and open 24 hours. Freeport is just a bunch of outlet stores.

We did the sunrise pass for Cadillac Mountain in Acadia and of course our morning was cloudy and couldn't see the sun. Waste of getting up at 4am. Otherwise Acadia National Park is cool and the bus service there makes getting around easy. Grab some popovers at Jordan Pond house.

This is what we were suppose to do. That sounds like the meal my wife was talking about. Is that about a half hour from Bar Harbor?

CF is so awesome. Not even a page into this thread, and great responses already. Thank you, All!!

Thanks for starting the thread. My wife and I plan to do a Maine trip next summer ourselves. The current plan is for us to fly into Portland and then spend a 3-4 day at Bar Harbor.

Jordan Pond is a pretty view and an easy hike around the pond

We stayed in northeast harbor by Acadia. Was a lot cheaper than Bar Harbor and we enjoyed it as it was definitely quieter. Did a number of activities with our kids so if you have kiddos I can spout those off if you want.

FYI you can walk over to Bar island at low tide which is fun.

Area reminded me quite a bit of the north shore in MN.

Yep walking over to Bar Island at low tide was fun. Only way to get to the island is boat or low tide.
