Mahoney

Honestly, I think Mahoney might not shake this the rest of the year. These slumps are difficult to kick out of. Especially when he's probably practicing well and messing up in games.

I wouldn't worry about Guyer's redshirt. We're trying to make a bowl game here. We can't afford to have a kicker go 1-4 EVER or miss extra points. We don't have the margin for error.

Shorter and shorter? His 50 yarder was long enough. Maybe not dead leg, but "cold leg"?

Didnt know he had a bad attitude.

If anything, as bad as this is for ISU, it may just be a good thing for Grant. Everyone has their downs, and his is right now. He's had 2 bad games. This past game he missed 3 kicks by probably a total of 3 feet. He's had two bad games, lets not throw him off the ship yet, it's not like he has lost a BigXII title on a kick yet.

As for Zach. I believe that they are planning on redshirting him this year so they can extend the gap between recruiting kickers. From what I understand, Rhoads isnt exactly a "kicker guy"...doesnt really like them.

The hell does that mean? PR has to be smart enough to not end up like Danny Mac and lose his job because he couldn't/didn't recruit a kicker.

That means that he doesnt like kickers...exactly what I said. If he can redshirt Guyer, creating an extra year gap from when they need to recruit another kicker, he will. Granted I'm not sure when the next time you will see another coach bring in two kickers in the same off season.

All of this talk of "confidence" is ridiculous.

At what point do the Iowa State homers admit the kid might just be not good instead of making excuses for how a blocked PAT is "in his head"?

An above-average to good kicker does not miss the chip-shots this kid does nor does he miss (or have blocked) that many extra points.

It's not ridiculous. Not even a little bit.

Vanderjagt (sp?) missed a big kick and was never the same in the NFL. If you don't remember he is the most accurate kicker in the history of the game

A golfer shanks a shot and it gets in their head. Same thing

I love guys who can't even kick and extra point talk like they are experts on kicking

What's your point? Everyone on this board talks like they are experts on Cyclone athletics and yet I don't see them on the team. Dumb comment.

Put in Guyer, atleast for one game.

I think his point was Guyer could be as good as anyone on this board at kicking, but people would still wish he was getting a chance.

So, to be clear, some of our fans are just back-up crazy.

People would love to see our back-up QB, RB (Bo) and kicker on the field - regardless of what our guys are doing in practice and what the coaches believe.

Couldn't agree more. Classic case of greener grass syndrome... Unless you are on the coaching staff, quit speculating who might be better. Seriously, do people really think CPR & Staff is putting the second best players on the field? Constantly pulling a kid (yes a kid) because he messed up doesn't help him put his head back on.

Once again, if Zach Guyer was better, he would play.

At least Mahoney didnt miss any game winners last night. He did go 3/3 on PATs and made a field goal.

Maybe next week he will go 3/3 and a game winner

I'm going to disagree. The past few Lou Groza award winners have all missed PATs at some point in their career. Graham Gano missed one in his senior season in which he won the award. They most definitely should not miss, but it happens.

One is understandable but he missed 3 in a row. And missed 3 last night.

IF you replace him, you better be ready to hand the duties to Guyer for the rest of the season because you just ruined any confidence he may have had.

But can Guyer kick it to the end line? Is he accurate in practice? It would be hard to make that switch if that's the case.
From Grant Mahoney's profile,
Hit 11 of 14 field goal attempts as a senior ... career long of 49 yards as a sophomore and senior ... hit 49 yard field goal against Dowling Catholic for season long as a senior ... put 51-of-61 kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks ...

So at least in high school he had the leg for it. I'm fine with leaving Mahoney in for now, but I would hope the coaches are at least giving Guyer a closer look.

Leave in Mahoney. 3 weeks ago we thought this kid was one of the best kickers in the country. All of a sudden he he is off and his confidence is down.

He will get his confidence back and he will be hitting 50 yarders again. No worries

It's not the 50 yarders that bother me, it's the little chip shots that he manages to somehow shank.

I don't know what the answer is, but I do now that people need to stop booing the kid...that is hawk bs.

Couldn't agree more! I was pretty PO'd last night when they booed him on his last miss. Boo the guys that play on Sunday if you think you gotta boo anybody. At least the pros get paid well to put up with it.

It is all in his head, confidence extends to a certain point, I don't want to put the game in his hands with the game on the line.
