In the current timeline that we've been following in the show, Sawyer was a conman, not a cop. So, he would never have met Miles, and I actually don't think that Miles was a cop in the regular timeline either. He was like a paranormal investigator or something due to his ability to see ghosts.
They were only partners in the alternate timeline we're seeing now as the "flash sideways".
I remember reading this book when I was younger... but yeah, the writers love to throw in these little references to books/movies that inspired them. From the wikipedia entry for A Wrinkle in Time:
"Mrs.Whatsit, Mrs.Who, and Mrs.Which turn out to be angelic beings who transport Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe through the universe by means of tesseract, a fifth-dimensional phenomenon explained as being similar to folding the fabric of space and time. Their first stop is the planet Uriel, a Utopian planet filled with joyous beings who live always in a state of light and love. There the "Mrs. Ws" reveal to the children that the universe is under attack from an evil being who appears as a large dark cloud called The Black Thing."
Overall I thought it was a pretty bleh episode, which is sad because I usually like Sawyer-centric episodes. I did like the connection that Miles and Sawyer had in the parallel storyline... the Charlotte connection was a little weird. Overall, the episode didn't really go anywhere. Next week looks awesome! Too bad I will be at Avenue Q in Ames. 
It seems certain characteristics and/or events are altered since before the crash to the "non" crash timeline.
Jack has a son and is able to show love/affection.
Locke is still with his g/f (I thought they broke up before the crash)
Ben makes a decision for Alex instead of thinking of only himself.

I want to know why in the flash-sideways, Sawyers parents were still killed and manipulated by the real Sawyer so he's obviously still a total jerk. However, in Locke's flash sideways they mention and show a picture of him so obviously didn't push Locke out a window or steal his kidney.
I wondered that too. Maybe he's a jerk that hides his evil ways from his son?
Well I think the fact that Anthony has family that works will throw a wrench into Fords revenge.
My guess is that it's the same reason that Kate is still a fugitive, Sayid is still a former-torturer & Locke is paralyzed. Remember that Faraday's mother told Desmond that it was his destiny to push the button - I think that it is their destiny to suffer something in their lives to make them worthy of going to the island.
Good question. We need a poll.
It could be a time machine or a big bomb. Any other ideas?
By the way, the sub looked very small for that many people.
No kidding. And just how does Sawyer think he'll use the sub to get home? If he sets up the MIB and Whidmore to duke it out, nobody will be alive to drive the sub.
There are essentially two time lines:
1 - Flight 815 crashes, the oceanic six get off the island and return 3 years later to detonate the bomb, kill Jacob and create a war on the island
Detonating the bomb creates timeline 2
2 - Flight 815 never crashes because the bomb detonated and now these flash-sideways are 3 years apart from timeline 1

I know it looks like him but it's not. I recognize the actor and I thought I could figure out how I know him but I couldn't find a link. The guy who played DJ Connor on Roseanne is not given credit for being on Lost:

I remember a scene from a few seasons ago where Whidmore was at an auction and bid on something that was the only piece found from the Black Rock. I can't remember what it was - but maybe it is something that he and the Others can use to regain control of the island.
