Looking back...Could things have been handled differently? (long)

Someone needs to figure out how to get a clip from Frozen of the "Let it go" song. It may come in handy quite often on this site.

I'm grateful for Fred having been our coach...however I'll always have a little animosity to the fact that he could have been our coach K and made ISU into a future blue blood(well maybe not that great). The only thing that really troubles me throughout his time is the Minnesota deal...the fact that he was actually seriously considering it after just a few years at ISU is mind boggling. A situation like Fred comes along once a lifetime..and it was too short lived.

I was going to blame Matt Thomas if we exit the tournament early again, but I think I'm with you. Let's blame Fred for not getting hired sooner.

His kids would have been affected in school if he had left sooner.:jimlad:

My guess is Fred did us a favor for several years, but he was always going to be in the pros as a coach. We were just a stop on the way to his goal.

I think the Hoiberg NBA rumors put us in a situation where we did lose out on some solid transfers and one could argue that it may come back to bite us down the stretch. On the other hand we may have found a coach that truly wants to be here and continue the success that Hoiberg started. Stay healthy, stay out of (foul) trouble and wait for Burton to become eligible. Fingers crossed.

Despite the fact that Fred interviewed and flirted with virtually every team that approached him, including the U of Minnesota and several NBA teams, he's still the single best thing to ever happen to ISU athletics.

He is probably the best overall coach that we've ever had.

It didn't turn into a storybook ending for us, but when you stop to think how much better off we are now compared to when Fred took over, I'm not sure how anyone could hate on him.

And yes, we probably would have landed at least one player that would have helped this year, but such is life.

This is why ISU should never hire a coach ever again that is talented enough to be wanted in the NBA...

Of course there was a recruiting cost to the situation, and I often wonder who knew what with the UAB turd laid by the team, but I am happy with the coach and the team we have. No matter how great a coach you have, it can often help to get a different perspective. Hoiberg himself often comments about the different things he took and learned from his different coaches. Maybe new coaching blood will take our great veteran players and make us an even better team.

True. And the new coach may utilize both halves of the game too.

I'm pretty sure the biggest roadblock to getting an immediate-available transfer this year had nothing at all to do with our coaching situation, but rather it was our lack of available playing time. Thems the breaks for a #7 ranked team.

Edit: Also, posting in a Hoiberg thread. (aka "It happened again!")
