Linebacker depth and progression

SLB Justin Rumple 6-3 212 JR

Who? I don't recognize this name at all.

GREAT STORY about this guy... my buddy and his girlfriend were over at my house during my senior year. This Rumple guy kept calling my buddy's girlfriend so I finally picked the phone up and told him to knock it off and go find some other girl to bug. He preceeded to tell me to hand the ****ing phone off now or he was going to come over to my house and put me in a world of sh**. I laughed for a while.... football players can be such d-bags.

He's a pretty big dude. I'm sure he would have been able to do some damage.

So nobody else noticed that the first team D during the spring game was a 4-2-5 defense with Devin McDowell lining up in the 3rd backer spot?

They spent most of the spring in that alignment. Of course, in the Big XII, you are going to have to play more nickel and dime than ooc. I think that Jesse Smith can be a very good LB if he's not asked to do too much (like he did under Chizik). Garrin can be decent. If we play against running teams, I'm betting that Tafoou and Raven battle it out for that third spot. I'm more worried about the LBs next year than this year. Better be looking at some JUCOs to go with Klein, Jackson and Knott.

I was at the spring game but, but I'll admit, I wasn't paying attention as much as I usually do. That's a bold move if that is the case. My only concern is that it would kill our secondary depth, which is the only spot on the defense where we have B12 level depth.

Also, I was just reading about Taylor Mays at USC, how much does it suck that he is a safety, yet he is bigger than any LB we have?

i think garrin has the stuff to be a great linebacker.... other than that i really dont see anyone else stepping in. jesse smith is to slow he can clog up the running game somewhat but cant pass coverage worth crap. hopfully princeton jackson can help out.

You know, I just had a sick observation. If all of us "pundits" can see the holes in our linebacking corps, think about what those actually studying game film (not just seeing it live) can do with that information? No wonder we get lit up like Vegas in July on D.....

:arghh:

For most of the spring they were playing a nickel defense with Smith and Garrin in as the LB's and either McDowell or sometimes Benton in as the nickel back. Also the coaches are pretty high on Taufoou possibly getting some decent playing time early on, but that probably depends on how fast he picks things up this summer and fall.

My whole thought on it is we wish to run a 4-3 D, but will see a lot more of the nickel package due to the spread offences we'll see in the Big 12, which is a good thing playing into our strengths depth wise. I'll look to see more of the LB's out even in third down situations during our non-conference stretch and then a steady dose of interchanging McDowell or Benton for Smith or one of the other LB'ers on 2nd or 3rd and long in conference play. Awesome we have coaches that'll adjust to the field of play and to our teams strengths.

i think the sleeper in our lb class will be Knott out of waukee....the kid has size and is faster then any of our current lb.....he's got wheels....his size and speed is something that could be really special!!!!

Iowa was recruiting him and courting him with either a greyshirt or walk on and when Rhoads came callin with a schollie it was an easy decision...

I'm really hoping he is the player we've been needing at the LB position!!!!!

Look out here comes DJK to thread steal over to a Hawk/Cyclone debate.....

Well...if you insist.

May I present to you...the greatest trio of linebackers in the nation!

What? They're not the best? WELL... I think we need to debate this for about 10 pages...

i agree. i think knott can be special. its really tough to play right away at LB as freshman, but he may be able. we will most likely get to see what he's made of this year as we need to find people who can play at LB

the hawks were stringin him along, trying to steal him and save a scholly by getting him as a preffered walk-on and after ISU offered they gave him the grey shirt offer i think, but im glad we got him.

Can we please confine the trolling to the instate rivals forum?

And yes, our linebackers really need to improve. Shoring up that unit will be one of the biggest challenges of Rhoads' early career.

Hey look, everybody, It's Larry, Curly and Moe.

Klein, Jackson & Knott could turn into a very nice LB core of the future. It would be nice to RS those guys this year, but I just don't think we're going to be able to do that. Our depth is deplorable and frankly, our starters aren't much to talk about either.

I miss Dobbins, Robo, Carper, Bowen, etc.

Jackson I think has the greatest chance to contribute immediately making up for strength now with speed. But I wouldn't be surprised if Toafouu start by the start of the season. I think we'll see more rotation at all LB'er spots than we have in the past.

I'm very excited about our '09 LB recruits, if they all stay at LB. That might have been our strongest position in that class.

<Yawn>
Oh yes, I'm sure you have serious wood every night about this 3 awesome linebackers. However, not one will amount to crap in the NFL, unless the same people running the stopwatches in Iowa City do the same at the combine.

I ran a 4.30 second 40 yard dash last night at softball practice, and I hit 14 homeruns out of 15 straight pitches. You can believe it, all my teammates will vouch for it. They were there. I'm waiting for Ferentz to call.

By the way, DJK is listed 2nd on the depth-chart. You better change your username to MM7. He's the new one to have you your next man-crush on.
