Info: Like OMG - Like Feature Feedback Needed

Thanks for all the wonderful feedback guys!

Plans at this point are to do some mimicking of a thumbs up icon to replace the like button (easier to make work on mobile versions) and next to it a number of those that liked the post. Then, you can click on a button to see the actual likers. You will also have the option to receive notifications of likes if you like.

I'm working on the SQL to convert the old likes right now so hopefully we can have this up and running within a couple days (beta testing locally first).

Number of likes on a particular post is good. Knowing who likes what is also good. & getting a fancy little notification for each like is pretty neat.

I don't care about like 'statistics'.

oooo I forgot about the little notification. I like that too!

This exactly. I don't care who likes my post, I just like to know I'm liked (whoa).

I don't know if I've seen anything on forums with the quoting thing before but that would be tremendous. Does this site tell you when a thread you posted in has new posts? I'm only asking because I use the landing page that shows newest posts, and not the one that is broken up by topic.

HN shows which threads you posted in have been responded to, but I like this sites landing page that lumps all the newest posts together. Maybe I can't have both?

Best way to do this is to use the "New Posts" link at the top to see all threads that have been updated since you last viewed. Any thread in which you posted will have a green arrow thing to the left of the thread title. You can click on that blue double chevron pointing down thing, and it will take you to the first unread post.

I post on a general pop culture forum that alerts you when you've been quoted in a thread, and it is amazing. Maybe it's not possible with the current CF software, but it is a thing that exists.

I like everything about this. In fact I like, like it, like more than a friend.

Ability to Like posts. Show who and how many people liked a post. Amount of likes received and given.

And that notification was kinda of addicting too, so that also.

Figure out a way to have it work on the mobile site. I am never on a desktop so the like feature is almost always useless. I'm sure plenty of people use the mobile site on a regular (constant) basis.

I had trouble doing a Like on my Kindle — the Like option didn't appear. Then accidentally realized it would work if I clicked Reply first -- then the Like button would display. (Not sure if that was the case will all mobile devices, but it's possible).

I enjoyed seeing the number of likes on a particular post, and also the person/people that gave the likes. I also enjoyed getting a notification when my post was liked.

On the other hand, I do not care about cumulative numbers of likes received/likes given over long periods of time.

I would also be a fan of a dislike button... Just saying.

Downvoting just turns into a popularity contest/******* match. The way some posters obsess about rep and likes we'd get 5 threads a day trying to figure out who was downvoting someone's posts. Keep it off the site.

Agreed. I also think neg rep or dislike will not help and would discourage people from posting/being active. If you disagree strongly enough, just post a reply, or get ISUAgronomist to insert one of his many negative rep gifs. (Which are funny, btw)

Rep for you if you code some or all of this yourself. Took enough comp sci in college to know I was comfortable paying someone else to do this kind of stuff for me. Nice work!

Might be a good thing in some cases...

Just went over to HN.

Sign of CF being run so much better than HN:

Someone asks where "like" button was, Jon had no clue, and said he'd look into it. Haha what a loser.

The request for notification on quote - while this might be something we can do in the near future, it won't be immediate because there is a lot of fine tuning of these types of queries so they don't bring the server to it's knees.

Yea, I'm sure it's easier said then done. Just thought I'd throw out the suggestion.
