Let's talk about National Parks

Also, Olympic is kind of nuts in a way you don't expect to see anything like that in the Continental US (at least I didn't). If you're in Seattle for something make the trip over.

Great topic for Earth Day.

We have so many great national parks. I've been to many of them and hope to make it to many more. I think the PBS series had a caption along the lines of "National Parks: America's Greatest Idea". That may just be right.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND

A bit out of the way, but I thought I'd better hit it or I might not ever make it back up there. It's out in the middle of nowhere and easy to put off. The first picture shows a bunch of "tetons" in the park. All sizes, shapes, colors, etc.

Currently student teaching in New Zealand. The first picture is on the way into Fiordland (that's how they spell it) national park. The second picture is Inside the park at a place called Milford Sound which was dubbed as the "8th Natural Wonder of the World". The last picture is from the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. If you're ever in New Zealand (which you should seriously consider visiting) these parks are a must on the South Island.

I've been to all the national parks in the southern half of California, and want to go back to almost all of them.

5. Joshua Tree: It was kind of lame. My buddy got some really cool pictures of the trees though.

I was there during the day and then saw a wedding to at sunset, and it's like two completely different places, with the sunset being the best. Lots of colors.

I don't have an exact number but I'm pretty sure I have been to over 100 parka and monuments run by the NPS now. I was very young when visiting some and really need to revisit them. I would like to see them all some day.

The big ones I haven't seen but are high on my list are Glacier and Olympic. Otherwise I've been to all of the major parks out west and most of the smaller ones.

I very much prefer the western parks but one of my more recent favorites is the Buffalo National River. It's great to be able to float the river without having to acquire a permit.

Yellowstone is the bomb. Wife told me I could choose our honeymoon and I chose Yellowstone (insert your own Old Faithful joke here). Been there four times. Need to get back soon.

I agree the sunset was really cool. My backpacking buddy got all his pictures at sunrise. I slept through it...

The Buffalo River is really cool. I hiked the trail up it and then floated down -- I'd definitely do it again.

Badlands NP, SD

Stayed at Cedar Pass Campground that is right in the middle of the Badlands. Explored the back country areas in the Wrangler and had a great time.

I'll second this. Was up there for a work trip, stayed over the weekend, and hiked. Pretty cool place.

Been to the Badlands, Olympic, Haleakala, Hawaii Volcanoes, and Wind Cave parks.

Also been to Alibates, Devil's Tower, Effigy Mounds, and Jewel Cave national monuments.

Hope to up the tally!

Wow, some of you are making us jealous! Loving hearing all of these stories and seeing the pictures. We just put up a small story on Sequoia National Picture on our site and wanted to share one of our favorite pictures of General Sherman in the waning light.

After a couple of days wandering the Giant Forest, we were losing all sense of scale. The giant sequoias are just that massive. We can't wait to see the coastal redwoods as well.

Did those along with the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. We did Yellowstone and Grand Tetons very early in the season. The Northeast entrance wasn't open yet and they hadn't repaired any of the roadside railings that had been taken out by snow on the East entrance route in. Traffic was much more tolerable even though we had to deal with some snow and cold. It was a heck of an experience.

EDIT: Almost forgot Saguaro National Park and Casa Grande NM. A little different experience from Ys and GT. I also forgot about the WWII Valor in the Pacific NM.

I need to get out there some day. That is something you need to see for yourself as I'm sure a picture, as awesome as that one is, just doesn't do it justice.

Great Smokey Mountains NP

Went to a niece's wedding in Galatin, TN and decided that since we were not that far from the Great Smokey Mountains that we'd head over that way. I had seen it as a kid (my Dad was a great traveler) but thought that it would be fun to do it again.
