You could make the argument that people around KU will look at ISU's turnaround and figure the smart move would be hiring Candle. And they could be right.

That thought crossed my mind - Candle sees Campbell’s success at a program that was a Big12 basement dweller and follows the same template - but ISU at the time still had significant facility, funding, and fan-support advantages. And the AD. Not that it can’t be done, but that continues be a tough job for a young, rising star to justify taking. I know, I know...

Honestly candle would be stupid to take it.

Iowa state had 3 bad years but previously 3 out of 4 had been good.

Kansas has had 11 bad years and most of those were worse than Iowa state’s 3. Iowa States AD was in good standing. Kansas’s is not.

I agree with your second part - that our program was positioned better for success in 2016 than KU program today. It would be a good job-offer pitch to Candle to convince him he can achieve what CMC has done. Don't know if many would believe that.

Completely agree. Even if he was somehow successful, the basketball program still overshadows the football program. The new coach will likely have a new boss soon which the AD will want his guy in place anyways. The current AD is not long for this job (pun intended).

Yeah, much more difficult job. If you look at the talent that ISU had on the roster when Campbell took over it was way better than anything KU has. It is going to take a really good coach just to get them back to a bowl game and that may take 3-4 years even with a really good coach.

Honestly the success that Clark has had at UAB amazes me. That program was literally closed down - eliminated - for six months early in his tenure. But he still has a 65% winning record there.

And another problem is that the current players have learned to lose so well. None of them have known a winning season. No player on the roster has ever known winning more than one conference game in a season. Players can learn to lose all too well and it is a hard habit to break even when the team improves.

This comparison of what Bill Snyder inherited to what Les Miles left presents a pretty good argument for why Ku is not an attractive job. Today's "futility U" may be a tougher turnaround.

They actually didn't play for 2 seasons. He stayed on and put them in the CUSA championship game 3 years running. He would be a great get for KU. But as noted above, I don't think he leaves UAB.

The new coach is actually stepping into a better spot than most have posted here. The facilities are actually very good outside of the stadium and the AD is on the hot seat only if this hire doesn't work out. Plus the talent level is much better than people think. Comparing it to what Snyder stepped into is way off. Snyder had nobody and was forced to beg students to come out just to scrimmage. Les inherited a program much closer to that. Les has actually put the program in a much brighter spot. The last 2 classes are talented but young. KU has potential to raise a lot money and fix the stadium problem but the big donors haven't been convinced the coach can turn the team around. If the next coach starts winning money won't be a problem. After typing that, KU will somehow pick the exact wrong coach to fix the problem because that's what they do.

What makes this even worse is that Spring practice is just around the corner. Trying to hire a new coach, plus staff, and then do spring practice is going to be a mess. You can already write this season off for KU.
