KU's new basketball dorm plan, $17.5mil

Here is a full story:

TOPEKA — A House committee Thursday rejected Kansas University's bid for $17.5 million in bonding authority to build apartments for basketball players.

State Rep. Amanda Grosserode, R-Lenexa, called the project "incredibly extravagant."

State Rep. Allan Rothlisberg, R-Grandview Plaza, said he thought KU's sports enterprises were wealthy enough to build the project on their own.

A motion to approve the bonds by the House Education Budget Committee failed on a 3-5 vote.

Earlier, KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little said the apartments, planned to be built near Allen Fieldhouse, were needed as a recruiting tool and to monitor and protect student-athletes from professional agents.

KU is seeking authority from the state to issue bonds for the building, which would be paid off by the university. Of the 66 apartments in the building, 32 would be for student-athletes and 34 for students who are not athletes. The project would also include a commons area, kitchen, parking lot and half-court basketball court.

The committee's recommendation against the $17.5 million in bonds will next go to the full House Appropriations Committee for consideration.

If the athletic department is paying the debt service on the bonds, why is this an issue? Lucky for us the Iowa legislature has never pulled that kind of b.s. If it weren't for bond financing, we'd never get anything done.

I do like this line though:

Yeah, recruiting sure is tough at KU without special dorms for the basketball team.

Just like the new $300 million renovations to Rupp Arena for Kentucky. FINALLY, Calapari will be able to recruit at the highest level!

Looks like the cost of a scholarship just went up. The power 5 conferences are lobbying for the right to pay an additional stipend to athletes, so how does subsidizing an extra $1000/month or more per player in lavish housing not constitute an additional stipend? If this facility were rented at a market rate, meaning at least enough to cover costs amortized over say a 20 or 30 year period, it would be that much per month or more per resident.

Kansas and Kentucky are setting the bar. With all the TV money every power 5 school will eventually have a facility like this for football and basketball players. Combine that with the existing exclusive practice facilities and academic centers and the players will miss on the opportunity to learn life skills, like finding an apartment, negotiating a deposit and rent, and god forbid consorting with a regular student. Throw in the shock when 90+% of them don't make the pros and have to slum it in a $400/month apartment.

That is so awesome. I would love if we could have something like that. Maybe if we can get a 20+ year commitment from Hoiberg, Pollard will raise the money. :)
