Special teams and turnovers have been the downfall of ISU the past couple of seasons, until those area are fixed, and the offensive line improves, it will be a struggle to win 8 to 10 games on a consistent basis.
You cannot preach about "winning in the margins" when you are missing easy field goals, have 20 yard punts and turning the ball over left and right.
KSU was solid in all areas last year, not great, but they did not lose games to miss field goals or giving up field position by poor punts and they took the ball away. ISU needs to learn from that and do the same.
I was going to post same. The #1 reason the wins don't match up to the stats and personnel is SPECIAL TEAMS.
It's a 3 phase game, and you have to win 2 of 3 phases. The last 3-4 years, they have started by losing 1 phase right out of the gate. Heck just bad punting and missed FGs alone you can name at least 4 games they could have won.
Developmental teams likes ISU (and Iowa, and KSU, etc) need to put emphasis on winning the ST phase to be successful. It's an area where effort trumps talent usually. How many games have KSU and Iowa won solely because of having great special teams? Hell just the last 2 years, Iowa has lost the offense phase terribly, but exclusively won with defense and ST.
