Keys To Beating The Hawks

I think the difference between Gesell and Morris is quite a bit smaller than a lot of you act like it is, but that's understandable because you're extremely biased. Gesell more than held his own against Marcus Paige, and even though after Iowa won that game I noticed a lot of people over here trying to discredit Paige, anyone outside of Cyclone Nation will admit he is one of the best guards in the country.

Gesell will hold his own against Morris. I'm more concerned about the BDJ match up. He's played very well lately.

And you are not biased toward Gesell?

Well at least you are correct about BDJ. Iowa doesn't have anyone that can guard him and I think we will see him on White at least some which will help neutralize White's quickness and running the floor.

You can debate gap between MM and Geselle but there is a gap. I don't see the value in comparing against a 3rd party like Paige. He is Top 20 PG along with MM but they have very different roles for their team. Paige has to score, MM has to create a possession advantage which is exactly where he clubs Geselle. Best case you can make is that MG fits the Iowa scheme as well as MM fits the Cyclone scheme. And there is no comparison between the schemes.

so this "Gesell is almost as good as Morris" is a real thing hawk fans think? I thought it was just Johnny losing it in the recruiting thread.

Taking all of our "incredible bias" out of it the numbers say he is literally twice as effective as Gesell. How delusional do you have to be to think it's even remotely close?

HE HAD 16 against UNC!!!!!!!!!!!

Both teams will have cold streaks and point runs. It'll come down to hustling for loose balls and wanting it more than the other guys. That's how the Hokes took down NC.

Yeah the gap between the two is exactly where we think it is. MM is the conductor for the ISU offense and puts his teammates in positions to score. There is no debating it. Should MG be able to cover him and made it difficult for him to shoot, sure. But his game isn't based on his shooting, it is more so on his passing.

Paige vs Gessell is a moot point, any knowledgeable Iowa fan, who watched the game knows Iowa played zone most of the game. Poor guard play is basically how any analyst would describe what happened in the games Iowa lost. How well did Gessell do against that Syracuse zone? Texas's length? I welcome any Iowa fan to think their guards can hang with ours. Next Hawk fans are going to tell us how clutch Gessell is at the FT, especially late in games.....

Link to the numbers, added Paige just for s&g's. Pretty telling. Total count figures are obviously skewed for Monte as the others have another season under their belts, but %/ratios are pretty telling.

The biggest key for winning on Friday in my opinion is focus and energy. The Clones have seemed susceptible to periods when they lose focus, make silly mistakes, and falter a bit. Some of those periods I will give credit to opposing defenses making adjustments, but some of them do just seem to be the product of losing focus. Iowa is the type of team that will be able to convert those moments into points, and lost possessions could be a deciding factor Friday. Still extremely confident that our team is the better team if we have our rhythm going and focustown is in session a sweet win in Iowa City should be the outcome. I just hope Georges has reason to make another ill-advised, but glorious, comment about it being a Cyclone state this year. :)

Don't let White beat his guy down the floor and keep him off the line and Iowa State wins. Iowa doesn't have enough offensive options to win if we do that.

Who on earth would admit that Gesell is one of the best guards in the country? Anyone with half a brain would disagree with that ridiculous statement you made. He runs around at full speed dribbling in circles until the ball gets stolen from him. If you want me to, I can name at least 25 point guards (outside of Morris) that are miles ahead of Gesell. Man, that has to be one of the most idiotic statements I've heard in a long time.

Don't get carried away, there might be some somewhere but they won't show up here.

our bias is called 'math' or 'numbers'. Section110's bias is called 'ignorance'.

Good point, and makes me wonder if we'll see a lot of zone from Iowa?

If they catch us on an off shooting night and can't get into a fast transition game offense, the zone is a good strategy against us.

Hot sports takes everywhere.

It's simple. Iowa isn't very talented or well managed, have an average game and ISU should be fine. Personally I have my eyes more set on Drake to get the first look at how McKay fits in.

Have you missed all of the previous Iowa-ISU games?

Gessell's performance against Paige is an outlier so far this season. If he plays like that, yes, he will be fine. His problem is that he doesn't usually play like that.

The question that needs to be answered is this... If Iowa likes to play zone what happens when Iowa State starts dropping 3's like they are going out of style? I don't think Iowa matches up very well if they have to go man to man against the Clones. In summary the Hawks better pray that Iowa State has a poor shooting night if they want any chance to keep this game within reach. If ISU is on from the perimeter you can turn off the lights in CHA because the party will be over.

The gap between Gessell and Paige only looked small to you because A) you're an Iowa fan and B) because Paige had the second-worst shooting night of his three year career. Paige chucked up a putrid 3-12 threes. I don't see Morris chucking up 16 shots like Paige did. Gessell played 34 minutes against Carolina and had one assist. Paige is one of the best guards in the country but he played terribly against Iowa and Gessell still didn't strike me as comparable to him. Gessell will have to have an excellent night badgering Morris for Iowa to pull off the win.

The issue is "can Iowa State drop 3's like their going out of style" while on the road? They weren't even very good at shooting threes last night while at home against a below average team in UMKC.

Monte's career offensive rating is only 25% better than Gesell's. So, I guess if you remove that then you could maybe argue it's a close race.
