Keys To Beating The Hawks

Other than the obvious "we need to score more than Iowa" remark, this is a game with a very interesting matchup. We live and die by our shooting, so obviously that needs to be on. There is one key, however, that pops up into my head for beating Iowa:

Daniel Edozie. While Iowa is clearly a much bigger team in the paint than us, a guy like Edozie is huge for us. He draws fouls with the way he fights for rebounds and putbacks on offense. If he can get White, Woodbury, and that chipmunk looking fellow, Uthoff into foul trouble early, they won't stand a chance against us. I like him and Hogue being out there together because they will draw fouls on their big guys. Once their bigs get into trouble, it's not even close to who will win the guard play.

What do the rest of you think is the biggest key to winning in Friday other than the obvious, outscore the opponent remark?

What do you mean by this? I don't think we can shoot 30% from the floor and win but what team can usually? I don't think this team needs to make X number of 3's or something like that to win though

Controlling the BOARDS

This guy nailed it. The single most important aspect of the game is rebounding. I don't think ISU is going to outrebound Iowa, but if they can at least be competitive in that category then I think they'll get the W. Iowa does have a tendency to struggle on offense, but the more possessions the Hawks have the more opportunities they have to score and keep pace with the Cyclones. If the Clones can limit the amount of opportunities the Hawks get they'll win.

I think the keys are all with us, and are the same as every game:

1) Attack on offense, staying aggressive provides the pace and gets us to the FT line
2) Defend without fouling. We are #3 in the country currently in opponents FT rate, we need that to apply on the road as well.

If we can do those things, we'll be fine.

Hot sports takes everywhere.

It's simple. Iowa isn't very talented or well managed, have an average game and ISU should be fine. Personally I have my eyes more set on Drake to get the first look at how McKay fits in.

If we lose, I am sure there will be plenty of people saying the sky is falling. Does this game really matter, no. It is the biggest game of the year in IC. But if we lose, so what. Come the end of the year, ISU is working towards going to the final four and Iowa will be grateful if they even get a playin game. I trust Fred's plan a million times more than Fran's plan.

I did hear on the radio the KGYM guys were talking about the most likely upset that Iowa will pull off this year in Carver, and they said Wisconsin, so I guess that means they don't believe that Iowa can beat ISU in Carver.

Nah, more like they don't think beating ISU would be an upset.

I am a little concerned about our bigs getting into foul trouble (mostly Georges). I'm guessing Edozie and possibly Nader will be getting some offense-for-defense substitutions. It'll be interesting to see how our double-teams and defensive rotations work. Arkansas had trouble with that, Maryland not-so-much.

I want to see the hedging double teams like we did against Arkansas. No need to full on double, but have a guy hedging to the general area to give them something to think about.

Let's be honest... I'm as big of a Hawk fan as it gets, but in the grand scheme of things Carver isn't hostile at all. Maybe if Barta would get some brains and surround the court with the student section like Michigan State does. Instead he has a bunch of old big money donors golf clapping and only getting out of their seats to go empty their bladder.

It's better than you think. And will be especially against Iowa State. Iowa has been good at home in recent years. Look at last year. They only had 4 losses (2 of which were in their power slide at the end of the year). And they were close: 69-71 in OT to MSU, 69-76 to OSU, 74-79 to Wisconsin, and 63-66 to Illinois (bad).

I agree with this.. Double team in the post and apply ball pressure to the guards. I'm not afraid of giving up open looks, just want them to work hard for the open looks.. Good Transition D is obvious, we just need our superior guards take over the game on both sides of the ball. If we play with the same intensity on D as we played against Arkansas I'm confident in our ability to win this game.

I honestly think the number one key is to make their guards look bad. If we can force White and Uthoff to do everything it should be an easyish win.

Shut down White and Gesell-make someone else beat us. Their scoring options drop off dramatically after #1 and 2

Yeah, I agree - so this means:

+ good transition D, Gesell makes a lot of points in transition, but not as big a threat in a set O.
+ To shut down White means, blocking out on Defensive boards as he gets put backs, and no dumb fouls, or +1 fouls. White can't create, he only scores off somebody else's creation.

+ need +40% shooting; especially from Trey point land.

+ continue our excellent FT %: Georges / BDJ / Edozie / Monte - currently excellent FT%.

+ No Georges / BDJ / Monte with 2-fouls in first half. We need all their allotted minutes for the first 20.

+ Turnovers < 12 for the game.

Gesell averages 6 ppg and shoots 33% from the floor. He kinda shuts himself down. Uthoff is a much bigger threat

You realize that Iowa will be favored right?

I re watched the game last night. Biggest things I saw that could lead to our success was last year our bigs couldn't get back because they were a little out of shape compared to White. This year I think we are in better shape, we are more athletic (especially Georges, obviously) an we are longer (BDJ and Nader are both long). Last year we got to the free throw line at will, I think that's a big factor to atleast get someone on their frontline in foul trouble. Let's be honest we all know the strength of that team is their frontline and their ability to hit the boards. If we can rebound even close to even with them that's advantage us. Our guards will put the game away. The only thing I'm concerned about so the level of intensity this team will come out with, the topic of them having a lot of home state kids is not something to be ignored. Talent wise the two teams are not comparable but when you look at what the game means to the people playing there is probably a definitive advantage there for them. Get out and get up early and take their lackluster crowd out of the game early and let's go get a W in ginger land.
