Kent State post game thread...

-way too much running in the 1st half
-sucky field goal kicking
-mediocre QB play
-letting their QB scramble all over us
-allowing 200+ yards on the ground
-untimely turnovers
-untimely penalties

+JJ Bass...he's a player
+Blythe can still catch
+o-line looked solid

The stadium atmosphere honestly completely sucked. When Kent State scored their 1st touchdown, I don't think the student section every got going at all.

I wasn't proud to be in the student section, I think we have a long way to go before we even become an average student section. It wasn't loud at all.

I guess it is all good, all that matters is the Iowa game . . . .
I couldn't really tell how loud the student section was since I was in it but I would like to get the opinion from someone who was there but sitting somewhere other than the student section.

The intro absolutely sucked and the crowd never got into it. The atmosphere was way better for the first game last year. Our offensive and defensive lines were both physically dominated imo. They were able to run the ball better than we were. We were lucky to force two turnovers in the endzone or the score could have been uglier.

I was sitting in the opposite corner from the student section and thought they were pretty loud for most of the game until KSU took control.

I was trying hard to fire up the student section and get them going... but our student section really does suck for the most part. I hate to say it but we're probally the loudest when we're chanting "Bull****"

There were some empty places, but ok for a Thursday. A lot of people started leaving 1/2 way through the 4th quarter, I was very disappointed with that (we weren't out of the game yet), but it was like 9:30 on a weekday, so it was sliiiiiiiightly understandable (Still didn't like it)

By the time the game was over, the stands were largely empty

For those who think we won't win any games, I think you're jumping off too soon. For starters, just because it's a MAC team doesn't mean that they can't be decent, especially when we have a new system and a guy that is having his first go as head coach.

Adjustments can be made, experience will be gained, and we can improve. To say we'll go winless is a little extreme...

What bothered me was the fact that our game got very sloppy towards the end - I was expecting a tougher mentality and better endurance

Thoughts:

I said it earlier this week. MAC teams scare me. While I was hoping for a blowout, I had a gut feeling this was going to be a tough game.

The defensive line got dominated in the 2nd half. Every play they were at blown least 2 yards off the LOS.

I don't care if you're USC or if you're Temple. You turn the ball over in your own territory, you're going to lose.

I'm still mad at Culbertson. DOINK!

I thought the crowd arrived a little late and never seemed to get into it. I have seen many games at JTS where the crowd was much better.

Our offense didn't look bad in the first half. It was just inconsistent. In the second half there was just no swagger out there at all. Very lazy breaking from the huddle and just not a lot of excitement in their body language. Meyer was Not running for his life all night, so that cannot be a valid excuse.

I thought our defense came up big in the beginning, but our offense kept sticking them in really bad situations. Eventually they crumbled and completely fell apart.

I can't describe how tired I am of not having a field goal kicker. I think the last time we had a legitimate kicker was back in the Walden days.

You have a good time Funkmaster(not just watching your team win, but in general)?

I had a great time. I thought it was a great atmosphere. I didn't get to tailgate, but I at least got to throw back some beers with the family before taking a shuttle from my Grandparents retirement community. I went outside to smoke during half time and some cool ISU fans gave me a couple of beers and we chated it up.

I hated that too. What was with the student reaction to Blythe going out of bounds? He caught the ball in the back corner of the endzone, but was well past the white paint, and the students were going berzerk saying it went in. Maybe it was just easier to see from higher up.

I was the most disappointed by far with Bret Meyer tonight. For starters, he's locking on to receivers again, a lot. He can't look off a defender. Secondly, it's not bad to throw it to Blythe.

Our defensive line play was also pretty crappy. Braaksma is terribly, terribly undersized and we saw that Alvin Bowen still has so much room for improvement in the linebacking corps.

That's just standard student section. If a call ever goes against us, it's bull****. Doesn't matter if it's right or not. I was in the front row and I knew Blythe was out from his position and the way he fell. I remember a BS chant a couple of years ago after a holding call on our OG (of course, our RB went for a big gain), and it wasn't even close. The guard basically form tackled the DT.

I am pretty confident that they couldn't see what was going on. They just figured since he caught it was a touchdown.

I think in the student section when they did get loud it was just too late. We start getting loud just as Kent State is coming up to the ball and/or hiking the ball, so it has absolutely no affect. We have to be loud continuously for it to have some affect. And we can't all be yelling "Let's Go State" as OUR team is lining up to snap the ball. That frustrates me so much.

I dunno... it can be hard to see what happens sometimes but from where I was on the 10 yard line, I could tell he was out (Heck I knew it was out before I even saw who the ball was going to)

Now I have a hard time judging how the section does picking up cheers... it seems to me they don't usually get more than 10-12 rows up (if that), but it is really hard to tell from the first row. What is not hard to tell is that they prefer negativity (booing, chanting BS) over cheering. The best way to get our student section to cheer? Put a camera in front of them...

Again, it's possible, though as Superfan pointed out it really wouldn't have mattered if they saw it or not. They'd say the same thing

Thats largely the cheerleaders fault - they're the ones that start those cheers

I am not ready to give up on this year like so many of you are. I think there will be tremendous growth and we can still salvage this. Brett did look bad, but he is learning a new system and just played plain rotten. I think we have the talent and once Chiz gets the opportunity to get these guys coached through the mistakes we will become a team we are proud to watch. Have patience and stay loyal!!!

Meyer did look horrible
Bass was great
atmosphere, what atmosphere...dont get me started with the 2 fat ladies I sit by and dont stand EVER!! Dont know how many times I said f-it I'm standing screw you people out loud, not to myself.

We will get better this is only one game....
LOYAL SONS FOREVER TRUE...
LEARN IT, LIVE IT!

I still think Meyer will be alright. He played rough tonight, but the guy was playing "Barney Ball" the last 3 years and now he's learning a new system just like everyone else. Although the 2nd INT he threw was just a bad decision.

Not much to do other than get ready for UNI and hope for the best. The coaches get a couple extra days to prepare. Be interesting to see how we play.
