JTS Improvements - Want More

You must be new here.

For many old-timers, the "recently" renamed University road will always be fondly remembered as Elwood Dr.
I grew up in the Ames area, but I've been gone so long that I'd completely forgotten about Elwood being old name!

They were dropping off a beam as we drove into the game last Wednesday. There is your completely uneducated update.
And yet no pictures from you. This will be remembered. Shame... shame... shame... shame... shame... shame...

Kind of a weird thing to challenge somebody on. Born at Mary Greeley '68. Lived on Linden until I was 4 and learned to swim at Carr Pool. Attended Meeker until midway through elementary, then Ballard. Skated at J4, played video games at Dark Star (both on Chamberlain and out at North Grand next to Hardee's across from Woolworths), spent my Boy Scout Bucks in the basement of Bledsoe's on Main Street, got my teeth drilled-n-filled by Doctor Buck a couple blocks north of Main St, went to church at the United Methodist Church north of Main St, played on the old fire engine in Brookside park, saw movies at the old Century theaters and the two screens in North Grand (as well as the drive in out west on Lincoln Way), went with mom to get groceries at the HyVee on Duff which is now a Dollar Tree (next to the Palma's restaurant), scooped the loop behind Main and hung out in the Hardee's parking lot on Welch in high school.

Left IA in '95 and as far as street names and numbers in Ames I've forgotten most of them. I can still get where I need to go in Ames when I'm back for games, but couldn't give a **** remembering street names.
Dude, it was a joke.

Not a fan of renaming to such a generic name. If you're going to change the name why not George Washington Carver Blvd?
Great point! I'd suggest Jack Trice Blvd (may be taken, too lazy to look up), Cyclone Alley or honor more recent: Campbell Court, McCarney Mall, Purdy Parkway, Hall Highway, Allen Avenue (chase or lazard), Kolar Drive (couldn't think of K type road), Lanning Lane, or bring back Clyde Williams. How'd they make this change without consulting a CF poll?

Will be interesting to see when (day/time) they do the part over University. Guessing they will close off both sides of the road/access all at once and get it all done then. Maybe do it early like on a Saturday or Sunday.

I'd bet they probably do it at night, but given the relatively short spans and I'm guessing the limited number of girders (probably 5 of them) they could do it on a weeknight and not really affect traffic too much. A good girder setting crew averages a beam every 15 minutes. Figure an hour for setup, 1.5 hrs to set, 1 hour to secure, an hour to teardown the crane. Maybe a 4-5 hour event.

Honestly, if the city lets them they could just close Elwood between 4th and 16th and do it during the day as well. Probably do it between 9AM and 3 PM so you don't affect rush hour traffic in Ames.

If I remember correctly, I believe some did say that they planned on closing the road for 1 day at some point. I will see if I can find where I heard that.

I can't find the video it is from. I think the last one Jamie sent out to fans, but the Iowa State Daily has this in their recent article:

"Eventually, the road under the pedestrian bridge, University Boulevard, will have to close once construction begins on closing the bridge. Pollard said the date of the closure will be towards the summer months when students are off campus, and less traffic will need that road.

An Iowa State Athletics spokesperson told the Daily it's too early to tell when the road closure will begin, as it largely depends on the weather throughout the spring."
