This is just my thought but what if they extended the upper stands so they were above the hills? It would increase the seating capacity while also keeping the hills and giving the stadium a more "completed" look
I believe there is a demand for those hillside "seats," and I sat there a time or two when they were the cheapest ticket and so on.
But the mud? Gross. So, like with everything, folks will be where they want to be, and the AD wants to keep those hillsides as part of the JTS experience.

That's pretty cool, but I just don't see that being a priority anytime soon. Also, not sure, but would that cut off the view from the new Sports Center? I think some of the use of that was to entertain VIPs during games, right?

Maybe something like that can be added in the future to go along with stadium seating in the current lower bowl area that currently have the backrests. The seats lost may be mostly replaced by converting bench seating to stadium seats could be mostly offset by the additional seating at the ends. And then charge a nice premium for those club-style seats to offset any loss in ticket revenue do to capacity loss, if any.
I would like more comfortable outdoor options between the 30s. Sitting in the end zone is not for me, and no way can I afford a suite. But I think there have to be options to keep attendance up since watching games on TV is generally much easier than attending games in person.
If something was going to be added in the future I would think they would want to put in piers now to support it while it is already dug up.
Cantilever it? I doubt it. Columns would ruin the hills as much as building lower level seating. If it were me, I'd just lay it out so that expanding down the road is more cost effective.
As someone that did play on those hills during very bad teams, and have brought kids to them, it’s a mistake to spend millions of dollars in that area, including spending on reshaping them, yet intentionally keeping them.
The best aspect of the hills in regards to generating young new fans was/is the price point. That could have been maintained while incorporating a North Endzone enhancement into the performance center. Likely improved, as the space that facilitated a good kid environment is rapidly decreasing, and as you mentioned making more of the grass steeped, will only further decrease this.
Just sick of half the people making them out to be something way more important than they are, and some icon of the stadium. Get over it people they arent Iconic, they are remnants of a half finished stadium, that were a cheep way to charge people to sit on the ground.
And coming up with reasons to keep them is stupid. There are so many better things than ******* hills. There is a reason no finished major stadium or new stadium builds in Hills today. If they were some draw then stadiums would be adding them.
Actually there have been sports stadiums designed specifically to include grass areas.
I'm not going to say they are "iconic". But, they do serve a purpose and they do have a little bit of tradition to them. I do not think that ISU is investing heavily in them other than adding some retaining walls and bringing in dirt. Personally, I would have liked to see some lower level stands with a grass area above them. That said, the budget isn't unlimited and IMO they've made some pretty good choices so far with the renovations.
Wrigley field added a grass (turf?) area within the ticketed venue specifically to allow kids to run around etc. Our hillsides serve a similar role. I'm in the camp that would like to see a bunch of other improvements happen before bowling in the NEZ.
The difference is Gallagher Way (the grassy area adjacent to Wrigley) is not inside the stadium. If they replaced some bleacher seats with a grass seating area, then it would be apples to apples.
Gallagher Way would be like making the new entrance/plaza where the Olsen Building was all grass, then having that sectioned off for ticket holders during games.
If there is a market that is profitable for seats over hills, I believe our accountant AD would push for that. If there is a legit profit for suites in a giant skybox, that will be built. I don't think there is a strong enough motive yet. Someday. Probably smart to wait.
